Chris Thile appears tonight at Carnegie Hall, this time as composer rather than performer. #The occasion is a performance by Emanuel Ax and Edgar Meyer on piano and bass respectively.
The evening features Bach, Haydn, as well as new works by Meyer, Bright Sheng, and Chris Thile, who is quoted as describing his piece as “a playfully fast-paced four minutes that owes much to both [American fiddle tunes and the Rondo form].”
Thile’s piece was untitled, last I checked. #He’ll have to make a real effort if he’s going to match Edgar Meyer’s flair for titles, whose works tonight include, "The Great Green Sea Snake" and "Please Don't Feed the Bear".
There’s a pre-concert talk, and perhaps Meyer will talk some about his collaborations with Thile.

For anyone interested in Thile's foray into classical music, you might like to read an interview I recently did with Noam Pikelny. He talked a lot about Chris' approach to composing.

Will there be anyway to hear or see this piece performed? The odds of me making it from Kentucky to Carnegie Hall tonight are slim.

Nice interview on UK-bluegrass.
I suspect, though, that tonight's performance will be very different than Blind Leaving the Blind - since that was SO rooted in the bluegrass quintet tradition.
It would be great to hear more about the origins of tonight's piece, although I imagine it comes out of studying composition with Meyer.
Chris or Edgar, are you out there? Anything to share with the Cafe patrons?

I saw the show at George Mason when they were touring together, and it was definitely among the most amazing nights of music I've ever experienced. I really hope they put out an album together...Soon.

I'm pretty sure I read that they were working on one, although I'm not sure where I read it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

This concert was reviewed today in the NY Times by Steve Smith, and the article should be available on-line. #
He describes Thile’s ‘Rondo for Bass and Piano’ as, “filled with perky lines that raced in circles, with pauses for the performers to catch their breath”. #I’ll just add that Thile’s short composition DID sound familiar somehow - intricate long streams of notes that reminded this listener of his mandolin technique – particularly in Edgar Meyer’s precise playing.
It was a fun evening that stretched my ears a bit.
