Be sure to shop individual instruments re. Lebeda. From my limited experience, there is not much consistency in Lebeda. Some of the carving appears a bit weird too, which could contribute to the inconsistency as Lebada works out what is wanted over here in the USA...I do not believe he is "there" yet. Having said that however, certainly Lebedas exist that are quite fine in tone (which is why you need to shop individual instrumets...not a bad idea for most/all other instruments, as well).

I've played a few myself. Most I've played have been a bit thin sounding but one was very nice. I would say they all sound quite good though. They have more of what is becoming expected of the newer mandos. They have a even sound across the strings and a very pleasant high end (eg. not Gibsony). The craftsmanship is really nice on all of them and they play fantastic. I'm a huge fan of radiused boards and fat frets. They've got both. I would give them a long look but give 'em a play before you buy...

i think lebeda has come a long way in sound and tone. i played a premium plus and the finsh was incredible. the tone was even all the up the neck even the high frets (12th and beyond) were crystal clear. i have had a bunch of mandolins (weber fern, capek old era, scot, rigel, etc.) and i really do mean this, this mandolin had the best tone and playability of any mandolin that i have had. Jeff at mandolins.net has them for sale and offers an approval time. for the money, fit, finish, and tone you absolutely can't wrong .i bought a mandolin from him and he is so easy to work with and tells you the truth.
I have a very loud & bassy one. They are exquisitely assembled, the workmanship is beautiful. My friend Craig has one that is quite similar in tone, though a year apart. His is a bit more mellow than mine. Very high value for the dollar, in the "pretty darn good" range but not competing with Loars Gils Nuggets etc.
