Thanks to the Steve Howe thread, and GibsonA9 for the suggestion! Mood For a Day scratch track on mando- there's a clam but life's too short and I'm only human. (http://www.johnmcgann.com/moodMcGann.mp3)

Hey that was great John. What's the little intro at the end? At first I thought it was Roundabout and then I started wondering if it was YYZ. I should know, but haven't listened to Yes or Rush in 10 years.

Anyway, great version of Mood for a Day,
Don

Wow!

John McGann, you are my new Americal Idol. That was even better than Sanjaya! LOL

Seriously, that was awesome. Thanks for the time and effort you put into it. Did you figure it all out by ear?

Hopefully some other Cafe-ers will follow your lead and record some cool Yes-Mando...

Brian

Outstanding job ! 'Yes' was my favorite group as a youngster, saw them live from 72' to present. Like I've said before -" John, you're the bomb."

Aw shucks, thanks!

It's in my DNA- I started trying to work it out by ear on guitar when I was 15 and has been with me since. Steve Howe's playing was a real obsession for me, and I spent months and years learning to play his stuff (not always accurately, but I try Mr Faulty!)

This AM I thought about how the nice descending pull off section uses open D and G strings in the bass- and how those are on the mando- so I sat down and worked it up, tried the rest of the piece bit by bit, made some octave adjustments and voicing decisions, grabbed a mic and recorded it. It's not all that hard to play...

Bear in mind I've been playing it (on and off) on guitar since 1975 or so and you could probably see the transition to mando took about an hour's practice (it sounds it too- i could have been cleaner-but since it's not for a CD...)

The little riff at the end was Heart of The Sunrise (the next track from Fragile).

Thanks again, maybe next week I'll go for side three of Tales From Topographic Oceans on octave mando http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Sounds great on mandolin, and I never, until now, would have thought of it as a mandolin tune.

How much $ you got? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Seriously- I just sat down and worked it up, no written material at all.

That was really cool. The only thing missing is a smiley holding up a lighter!

I listen to it regularly now. What amazes me is how quickly you put it all together from a random suggestion to your MP3.

Incredible!

Here's a link to a transcription service I heard about once: johnmcgann.com (http://johnmcgann.com) #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Very nice work, John. That brought back memories, as I was a big Yes fan back in the 70's. <sigh>

The '70's...it feels like it must have been almost 10 years ago, doesn't it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

John,

That is some amazing work. I like that little dig with "Heart of the Sunrise" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

May I make a request?

How about Cans And Brahms? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Now, Keith, I might have to consider an overdub or two on that one, since Rick took it from Brahms 3rd Symphony...there's a few more parts to cover there...how about something easier, like South Side of The Sky? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

How about "Sketches in the Sun", the Steve Howe solo track from the GTR album?

(Edited because I don't know "Howe" to spell.)

Excellent! I find it hard enough to play on the guitar.
