Are there any guidelines as to how the strings should sound on the wrong side of the bridge on a correctly set up mando? Is it normal that a string just buzzes and doesn't ring out? (My last G string)

i would suspect that the troublesome tailpiece cover from your other post is preventing the string from vibrating. a lot of people don't want the strings below the bridge to make any noise anyway and use rubber grommets, strips of leather or whatever to prevent any "sypathetic vibrations" in that area.

Yes I'm just playing it with the cover off now - better to look ugly and sound good than the other way round.

I don't know that I've ever seen Jamie Masefield (The Jazz Mandolin Project) play with a cover on his tailpiece. Looks like crap, sounds like butter...
