Has anyone listened to this cd? Roland White plays mando on some of the tracks but it's kinda buried in the mix. I guess that can be more of the old time tradition. Breaks didn't really come along until bluegrass, jazz etc.

I love Ry Cooder's work, especially the early material and was hoping for some of that since the story this is built around is set in the depression. But for me, it's the weakest thing he's done. It reminds me of Paul Simon's attempt at writing a Broadway musical where the concept got in the way of making interesting music. It's gotten some good reviews so I guess others like it.

kinda on the subject my first good mandolin was a very early Gilchrist F2 copy custom built for Ry Cooder with a virzi. It was a steal at 800.00 and was also stolen then returned! Wish I still had that one.
