PBS's The American Experience (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/) is broadcasting a program on the Carter Family tonight (Monday, Mar. 26); it's at 9 p.m. EDT in my local (Rochester NY) TV schedule.
No more influential group in the history of American country music, IMHO.

They have NEVER broadcast the Carter Family American Experience. Tonight they will be showing an AE on Annie Oakley.
I got to see it thanks to NetFlix. It's a good watch. I felt it was a bit to focused on A.P. and sort of neglected Maybelle.
FWIW: I'm currently reading 'Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone", and I highly recomend that book to anyone interested in the Carter Family's history, and music. It's well written, and much more in depth than the AE documentary.

Thanks, Alan. I did see it once before and liked it so much I tried to find out more about it and if I could buy the tape. I'll record it tonight.

Great book. A fascinating bunch, the Carters --- even Maybelle's husband Eck, who was quite a character.
And you get a real feel for just how good looking those Carter girls were --- turning the heads of Hank, Elvis, AND the Man In Black.
And probably Chet Atkins.

AP was important as a collector of songs. Not that it makes him any more important than Maybelle, with her guitarring.
I'll have to look & see if it's airing here.

Call it sour grapes.
What can I say ...
... my camp-chair busted on me, and my tailbone's bruised from the fall.
... it's raining cats and dogs outside.
... it's Monday.
... and my PBS affiliate isn't showing me squat about The Carter Family.

I was lucky enough to see the show for a second time; it's so enjoyable. I was singing Are You Lonesome Tonight later that evening and felt like a total idiot when I realized Elvis had lifted those exact lyrics for his version, and I'd never even noticed...really observant, here.

I saw this late one night on repeat on KOCE here in SoCal... Such a sad story, really. Loved seeing Gillian Welch explaining Maybelle's guitar work.

This past winter, I ordered and read the book 'Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone'. #Great stuff. #I see on YouTube that someone has uploaded several numbers from their 1929 recording sessions in New Jersey. #It's surprising how good it holds up after all these years. #I'm toying with the idea of making a pilgrimage to the Carter Fold this August, marking the 80th anniversary of their first recordings in Bristol and the birth of modern country music.

Loved the book and saw the PBS special kinda when it first came out.I was in the recording studio with a reformed Doors and nobody there cared and mocked it,Ian Asberry,Ray Manzarek I must say Robby Krieger liked it.I found this disturbing because it was the only time I got to see it.Especialy for a guy that on the way back from Merlefest last year almost went south to Bristol rather then to North PA.

But interesting that GW uses a flatpick to get the sound that Maybelle got with her thumb and a back-and-forth index finger strum. The program went directly from Ms. Welch, to the old film of Maybelle playing Wildwood Flower on that big ol' L-5, and I reflected again what amazing skills and insight those three unschooled musicians from the hollers of Virginia had. Damn right their music "holds up" -- like Beethoven's, or Stephen Foster's.

OF course, it helps when you copyright & then get to take credit for songs written by the likes of Stephen Foster! (This is a known fact)

Are there any Stephen Foster tab sites?

I don't know of any, but as his music is one of my special interests, I'd be interested.
