View Full Version : I've got a buzz..

Just got my new Kentucky 350S (mail order -- nearest KY dealer is 2 1/2 hours away) and I'm happy (plays in tune all the way up, looks better than any mandolin I've ever owned, etc.,) but it's got a light buzz. The set-up checklist said "No buzz" but the D buzzes on 8 and 12 and the A starts buzzing at the 4th and buzzes all the way up to the 12th, then stops. G and E are just fine. Soooooo, before I called the shop, I thought I'd call on you folks to tell me if this is typical, abnormal, or death. Send it back for good? Send it back for an adjustment? Raise the adjustable bridge myself? Take it to a competent luthier? Wait till this humid weather passes and she how she adjusts? I want your wisdom before I call the shop (reputable, good people, well-known, set up instruments before shipment, etc.).

My guess is fret trouble. It sounds like a mill and recrown would fix it.
There might be some adjustment needed, but the fact that it buzzes on specific strings and frets indicates to me that the frets aren't level and probably weren't from the start. Unfinished fret jobs are not uncommon on Pac rim and other high production instruments.
A complete set-up will fix it whatever it is.

Almost sounds like a some negative relief (back-bow, too much application of the truss rod, not enough relief, whatever you want to call it).

Make sure you've got a little relief in the neck.

OK, so I called the shop and they suggested a truss rod adjustment (just like you guys recommended) so I tried to back it off and 1/4 turn and the nut popped off of the truss rod. It was already on the loosest setting. So now it's DEFINATELY as loose as it's going to get and it did, actually improve the buzz a bit (from 8 buzzing frets to 4), but it's still buzzing. So now where am I? It seems a truss rod w/o any play one direction (loosening) can't be good. If it were your purchase would you just have them "fix" it, or would you insist on another mando all together? One person at the shop suggested I beat down the 13th fret (the buzzer) w/ a hammer!
