How do you remove the small frets at bottom of the board without doing any damage?

Pulling frets can and usually does pull up splintered pieces of the fingerboard. This shouldn't be a problem as you will be sanding away the material anyway. I once scalloped one of my mandos using a drum sand wheel on my Dremel. I didn't cover the surface of the top of my mando and one slip was all it took to put a little mark on the soundboard.
Be careful.

Keep a hot damp rag nearby, before every fret pull or two press the rag slightly for 10-20 seconds... Should do the trick.
