Sliabhstv,
That's a mandocello by Gibson, I believe. I was sitting at the table next to Ted, but my eyes aren't what they used to be. Mike plays an awesome solo on that thing. Any Cafe memebers that can should make a place in their schedule for next year's Mandofest. The music ran the gamut from old time to jazz to bluegrass the classical with Chorro and latin featured this year. Its a great event. Thanks to Scott, Jeff D., Mass Street Music, and Liberty Hall for a wonderful event. I've got a second job lined up for fall teaching at a U. of Nebraska campus, and the wages are going to go to Mass Street Music for a new Collings A.

That big mando is Mike's Mandocello made by Monteleone. He plays it on two songs on In The Cauldron. Great sound!

Now what's that violin top with the f holes Mike's holding in one of those pics. Looks sharp.

PCypert,
Thanks for the call on the Mandocello. I'll take another leap, I think the mando your referring to is a L&H. BTY, getting up early does not pay. I was in and out of Mass Street before Mike, Josh & Jeff showed up. Next year, I stay all day.

It was by far the best Mandofest yet. #Mike Marshall and Josh Pinkham and his dad were a blast to witness, and John Reischman and John Miller were stunning. #I wish they would have played for another two hours. #The cleanest, purest mandolin-guitar duet picking I've EVER heard. #I had the pleasure of spending an hour with the two John's this morning and they are super nice folks, too. #Reischman has been my mandolin hero ever since I saw him with the Jaybirds last fall at Winfield. #He plays clean and flawlessly!
My hat's off to Scott and Jeff for hosting such a great show.

I don't think it's a Lyon and Healy. That'd be cool, but I've never seen one with f holes and rectangle inlays on the fretboard. Custome job? Small luthier? Someone was there.

It's a beaut Ted!
Heard many amazing mandos at Mass. brunch. One in particular really caught my ear. It was #48 or #49 Heiden(can't remember which he told me), #a gentleman from Iowa brought, and many played it. He said he's had it for about 2 years. It just BOOMED with projection on chops. The Davis mandos all sounded great too.

The mando with the scroll on the head was (and I guess still is) a De'Angelico. Really a beautiful instrument with a unique voice.

The big instrument Mike Marshal played is a Monteleone Mandocello. As cool is the photo of him holding someone's D'Angelico mando with a scroll top.

Do you have an easier question? Ha. Just kidding. John's a desert island pick for me. For a starter I'd say Bumpy Road or Up In The Woods first. But I love the Jaybirds too.

I've always been captivated by the looks of Ted's Django. Saturday afternoon Ted was gracious enough to let me play it and I was blown away. WOW. I have never heard a mandolin with so much sustain. The G string had a tone sweeter than soda pop. Fortunately for my bank account it was not for sale because I probably couldn't have resisted taking it home.

I wouldn't count out that Django not being for sale. Ted's been going through mandos like natural light at one of my family reunions. I'll give it a year http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Disclaimer: I don't drink Natural Light. My family sure does.
Here's a pick of Mike Marshall admiring a beautiful 1902 (I believe) Gibson.
Heres another pic of that D'Angelico with the Violin style headstock. This one shows the body a little better. It's hard to see with this resolution but the binding was just mad crazy (7 layers count em I/B/I/B/I/B/I).
Karen was playing a Collings for all it was worth while sitting in front of a most tastefully decorated wall.

It all looks terrific. We'll need to get a UK version.
Re: John Reischman's music, the only example I've heard of it was The Tony Rice Unit album Backwaters, where his playing is phenomenal but definitely in a very modern idiom.
Am I right in thinking that there are basically 2 strands to his playing - a fairly trad bluegrass style with the Jaybirds and a more jazzy thing altogether with John Miller. If so, where would Up in the woods fit in?
PS As your CD offer only applies to the US, I can't take you up on your Reischman CD sale, but I should try to hear some more of his stuff.
Scott Tichenor
May-12-2004, 4:42am
Dagger, I'll mail you one if you don't mind picking up the postage. It's a trip to the post office for any out of country order so since I didn't have so many of these I thought just keep it in country. But, since I'm an admirer of your playing let me know if you're interested and I'll make it happen. Up In The Woods is more bluegrass flavor. Bumpy Road is more jazz/latin influenced. Both great choices.
Or, if you'll meet me in Kirkby Stephen England in late June I'll be doing half of the Coast to Coast hike and I'll pack both to you free if you'll let me buy you a pint. Still working on details of that getaway. Not 100% sure it'll happen but I'm trying. Seven days on the trails with no computers... ---sigh---
Talon, Here is a pic of that Heiden you liked.

P.S. It was nice meeting you and I look forward to seeing you again at the High Prairie Jamboree next month.

So whats that attatchment on Mike's Loar from the front? Is it part of a tone guard? Except the photo of the back there isn't a tone guard. QUE?!
It looks like an arm rest to me. #I have one on my deep-box Freshwater mandolin that looks very similar. #Mine was made by David Brown in Australia, and I think Siren String Works also makes them.
You can see the metal clamp on the rear photo, just on the edge of the binding.

This in from Drew Horton who opened the Mandofest Friday night show with his jazz trio and did a marvelous performance. On Sunday, a 600 mile haul back to Colorado:
This photo tells a twisted story....

...Instrument cases in the back
But why would this person be taking a nap in the middle of the day?
Go figure.

I'm sure we can figure something out. I'll e-mail you privately rather than do it here.
Hmmm. Walking the moors of Yorkshire, a few pints of Theakstons at night with some mandolin playing to help it along. That sounds fine to me. I don't write that off altogether. Maybe see you in June.

That would be the wee laddie known as Wes McGregor of Wichita. The multitalented Wes also played guitar later that evening in the Mandolin Orchestra. Heres another shot of the retro looking, frequent picker infrequent Cafe poster also known as the mandostud, crosspicking a Davis.
