Just got back from the Mandofest evening show and it was awesome. What a great mix of musical styles and performers.
Scott Tichenor's Peculiar Jazz Mandolin Quartet started out the evening. Scott was in fine form tonight. I wish they would have played a few more songs though. Great stuff.
Midday Ramblers were up next and they played an instrumental set with one Bluegrass number at the end. This was the first time I've seen these guys play in over a year and they were cooking tonight. Kory Willis on Mandolin and Mike Horan on fiddle and Guitar worked back and forth on a number of tunes. The Ramblers are from Lawrence.
After a short break, John Reischman and John Miller (Guitar) played their set. This was my first time to catch John Reischman. Unreal. His playing style looked completely effortless and the tone from his well known Mandolin was incredible. He played a Brazilian number that was so sweet. He was standing in the lobby after the show and I chatted with him for a brief spell. I forgot to take my camera!!! A pic with the master would have been great.
Last but not least was the Mandolin Orchestra. It was my first expsure to such an Orchestra. Must have been at least 30 players. Mandolins, Mandolas, Mandocellos along with Guitars, Bass, and Percussion. Very impressed with their set. The Director, Jeff Dearinger looked like he would be fun to work with.
I spoke with Jim Baggett, of Mass Street Music, and he said they had around 80 folks over this morning for the breakfast. Wish I could have made that.
Liberty Hall, in Lawrence, is one of my favorite concert venues. What a nice old hall.
Next year, I'll have to get a jump on registration and sign up for a workshop. What a fun evening. I took my 18 year old son with me tonight and he enjoyed the show too.
Well done Scott and all those that worked to make this happen.
