View Full Version : Varnish finish

I have a six month old MT2V that has about a 2 inch "feelable" line starting at the tailpiece. It doesn't appear to be a crack as much as a separation of the varnish. It wasn't there when new, and I'm afraid that the dry winter here has caused shrinkage. I've done my best to keep the room humidified to at least 35%, but an average of 45%. I'm sure Collings would fix anything for me, but I don't want to knitpick. To you luthiers, is this worth shipping it across the country in the dead of winter, and if it is a hairline crack, do they have to tear the back off to fix it? I'm sure I'll be told to call Collings, but it's early in the morning and I thought I'd throw this out there. Thanks for any response.

No pics, but the sun has come up here and I looked at it in good light. There is a "dark" line which looks like a hairline crack. Also, it seems as though one side is detectable as being higher than the other. When it comes to hairline crack discussions here, which I never paid attention to until now, it seems to be a "great taste-less filling" debate. So I'll call the good doctors at Collings for consultation. Thanks.

It would be a good idea to take the string tension off until you get it evaluated.

i had a center seam separation once i(t was uneven too). It cost more to ship it than it did to fix it. I was real worried. I bet a repair man would just put some glue in the crack and clamp the sides or put it in a mold. But surely they wouldn't take the back off for this. would they?

Only as a last resort.
This situation sounds like it's not even getting close to last resort status.
