i recently aquired a wonderful unicorn & mustang f model mandolin in a trade and i cannot find much information about it. i have checked taku sakashta's website and it only refers to his archtop guitars. the only info i can find is a picture of one on frank ford's frets webpage.the serial # is 2054 and has a reddish matte sunburst. i would appreciate any info on these. thanks

Rest assured your Unicorn & Mustang is a well made instrument. Taku is a friend, and I admire his design work. He really knows instruments and sound. I think he can hear things I can't even imagine.

You have enough information to pursue more information if you have any specific questions. Send him an e-mail or call him.

I thought Unicorn mandolins were made by the same fellow who now makes the Phoenix mandolins Rolfe? A little more info would clear me up on this.

They were; this thread is about "Unicorn & Mustang" mandolins. See some pics here (http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Gryphon/NewInstGallery/Mandolin/UnicornMustang/UMMF5/ummf5.html).

These are made by Taku Sakashta, a famous archtop guitar maker. His website is www.sakashtaguitars.com

He occasionally makes a mandolin, which usually sell through Gryphon. I've played a couple, and they are very fine mandolins.

thanks guys for the info, i'm new at this and don't have a digital camera so i can't post a picture; but it looks exactly like the one jim posted. it is a very good mandolin, and the workmanship is flawless. the binding is the best i have ever seen. i'll try to hook up with taku and i appreciate your help.

Unicorn and Mustang is different from Unicorn. Unicorns were made by the man who now makes Phoenix. Unicorn and Mustangs are made by Taku S., who now primarily makes archtop guitars for famous players (Tuck Andress for example). His mandolins are top-notch. I layed one at Gryphon that I thought was one of the very best instruments I've ever played.
