Is there any better option than just sanding away to remove scorched area in the tight bends of the the F style rim. This is newly built rim in the white.

Sand out what you can. If there is still some left that can't be sanded out then dark stain should hide it. But a new bent side set would be the best if you can't get it out. It will make the sides thinner with sanding, so you should think about that also. Others may know how to "bleach" it out, but it is burnt wood and could be a weak point if burnt too deep. Maybe someone else has a happer idea on a fix.

Bill is right. If it got too hot, it will be weak and may break.

Thanks to both Bills. I am not too concerned about being a weak point since the worst scorch is backed by the point block. I was hoping for a miracle answer I guess. this rim is otherwise nice and has some nice figure so would want to save it if possible. Also had blond in mind but may have to stain to hide the darkened place if it won't sand out. maybe shaded from dark to light so the figure can come through in other areas. Sorry, just thinking on options while writing.

The scorched area will not take stain or finish the same as the rest of the wood, from my experience. Even after sanding. Do you have some extra side wood that you could bend and replace this piece? It might be worth it. Just think of all the time you're going to put into this project. To sacrifice the end result because you don't want to replace a piece of burnt rim? Are we talking "blackened" here?
I usually have a few places on my rims that are toasted to a golden brown, and they scrape/sand away with a little effort, and stain fine. If it's actually scorched maybe that's worse (?).

I've also had more luck scraping than sanding. A big razor blade works great.

John, not black just a little darker than golden brown, I will get to scraping and see how it works.

I use a lot of broken glass for scrapers, You can remove most of the scorch this way. then a bit of sanding. All good answers above. Jerry
