I just put a set of DR mando stings on my Old Wave oval. I thought I'd try 'em. The hype on the box says they last longer than comparable strings. It's interesting that the gauges are 11, 16, 26 and 40, so the same as J74s, except the A string is a little heftier. So far so good. I will update this thread with my impressions as they wear in, but I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences with them.

I tried em once. Couldn't tell much difference between them and PBs. As far as lasting longer, maybe. But not enough difference to give up on the J75's. Lp

I use them on all around. I think they last a bit longer than a typical PB non-coated string, but that's not the selling point for me. I just like the tone and feel.

My brother is a salesman for DR String co.
They're a small shop that takes a lot of pride in thier product.
He gave a box of Strings to Peter Rowan last year when Peter and Tony came to N.Y.
Peter put a set on during intermission. My bro is mentioned with a thank you on the "Quartet" cd....pretty cool.
As for the mandolin strings, I like them.

I have used them and have no complaints. I am trying out some flatwounds for my breedlove at the moment and unless I get some A string breakage problems I will probably keep the flats on. Overall I liked the DR's though.

I think it depends on the mandolin. I had a Flatiron festival F that sounded phenominal with the DR's. My Gibson is another story. I put a set on it and they didn't perform on it the way they did with the Flatiron. Used their guitar strings as well. Overall they are a very good string.

those are the same gauges as GHS medium strings

Couple years ago I went to the Guitar Show in Ft Washington PA and the DR string stand was the only stand in the whole show with mandolin strings. So I bought a few sets. Had them on a few different f-hole mandolins; Laura Ratcliff, Pomeroy, and BRW. The tone didn't impress me and they tarnished quickly. (Maybe our "chemistry" doesn't get along.) It was an unsuccessful experiment. YMMV

My experience was the same as Lee's. #I tried them twice on BRW #12 and didn't feel that they sounded as good or lasted as long as the standard J74s.

Work great for me. They are all I have used for the past two years. They have lasted a lot longer for me than daddario j74s. I am a fan of the tone and feel.

I love them on guitar but not on mando.

It's a personal preference thing.

I came to like them on guitar too, but then I also really like them on my mandolin. Of course a great deal depends on the particular instrument, the particular player, etc, but I have found that the DRs last noticeably longer than the similar D'Addarrios, such that they're definitely worth the extra dollar or two over the J74s IMHO. Also, I do think they sound and feel very nice. And they don't seem to stretch out and detune too much when a new set is installed, which I like. With strings like FireWires selling for $13-14 a set, I think the DRs are a bargain at $6 and some change.

On guitar, I like DR Sunbeams but not the regulars.

Do they have those different offerings for mandos, too?

I tried a set of DRs on my Old Wave oval hole. Put them on,and took them right back off. Just didn't care for the sound or feel. Also wondered, after reading how they were made, would it require more tension to bring them up to pitch.
