put half the money down today on a fylde octave mandolin that i've been drooling over for the past few months. spend a bit of time playing with two of them, one gloss finish , one matt, eventually choose the matt one,it sounded better to me. its gonna take a bit of getting use to the large body and width of the fret board, so i've plenty of fun ahead of me, looking forward to it.

Welcome to the ranks of CBOMers! We're a bit skewed off the path from the other denizens of this board, but no fear, our instruments don't "bark" like those itty-bitty counsins of ours http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Cool! I've had my OM for a little over a month now and truly enjoy it.

I mentioned in another post that I made the mistake of getting John McGann's Octave Mandolin book and CD - really enjoyed the CD and listened to it so much that in my head I sound like John! Until I actually pick up the instrument!

I also got Zan Mcleod's Irish Bouzouki video - also very cool to understand backup playing techniques.

thanks for throwing out the welcome matt, much appreciated.
i'm really looking forward to picking it up and i'm sure some good craic will be had adjusting to the size of body and neck width( as oposed to my banjo and mandolin). will let you's know how i get on, and i'm sure i will have plenty of questions.
best of luck
lawrence.

I've had a couple of Fyldes thru here, and they've all been great fun.

Congrats! Which model is yours?

I've never seen a matte finish Fylde - sounds nice tho'. I hope you'll be able to post some photos when you get it. I'm getting my Fylde bouzouki back soon after a year out on loan to a friend. Can't wait - it feels like I'm getting a new instrument (without spending the $$$).

its a touchstone octave mandola ( mandolin). regarding the different finish, matt and glossy were the discriptions given to me in the shop, but to be honest i couldn't see any difference except for the back of the necks, which were indeed matt and glossy.
