This will be my first mando or bluegrass or anykind of music festival. Hafta work on Friday so I'll go down early Saturday morning to check out the workshops.

Not much info on the website about the workshops. Are they worth getting up at 4 in the morning? Will they have something for a rank beginner?

I'd appreciate any info anyone has. I'll be the one looking uncomfortable with the MidMo M-11.

If nothing else, go sit up front and study the right and left hands of Compton and Long. They have extremely correct and powerful right hand technique, and you'll learn a lot about keeping your fingers close to the fretboard from watching their left hands. In fact, you may have a hard time figuring out what finger is pressing down a string. No flying fingers. Take something to record it. If it's over your head now, you'll have something to go back to when you're ready for it. You can sleep in next Saturday. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think it is ok to go to workshops that are over your head.....it shows you what is down the
road for you, and lets you better understand things you'll need to work on. Hopefully there will
be a slow jam, or beginners workshop for you too.

Workshops can be a little like the old saying "One mans trash is another mans treasure" so It's a little hard to say if it's worth getting up at 0h Dark Thirty as we used to say in the Army. There will defintely be something for the beginner and the more advanced player so #I would recommend coming on down. There will also be several jamming rooms with players of different abilities that you can sit in on after the workshops.

Sorry for the lack of information on the website but the person who normally schedules the workshops is not doing it this year and it was thrown in my lap at the last moment. The workshops will be at 9:00 and 10:00 but it will probably be tonight or tomorrow before I can tell you as to the specifics.

BTW the Wichita weather forecast is looking good for this weekend. If there's anything else anyone would like to know about the festival please feel free to PM me.

Really doesn't need to be said, but I will anyways - David Long and Mike Compton are really good! See them if you get the chance. They put on quite a performance Saturday. Talked to them briefly after their afternoon show; Mike was curious as to what I had in the mandolin case, which resulted in him briefly playing my Summit F100S. That definitely was my highlight of the day and I'm hoping the mando has some new mojo that didn't exist before. Thank you Mike.

I saw Mike and David at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC on a Wenesday night a few months ago. There were only a handful there and the wife and I got a nice up-front couch seat. An incredible set, given the few people there. They still played it like they meant it.

I had a great time and really enjoyed their set. Had a good visit with them after the set. Mike is teaching me to play so it was good to see him in person for the first time. The internet lessons are going well. Have a great day

"Mike was curious as to what I had in the mandolin case, which resulted in him briefly playing my Summit F100S."

These are not the exact words but basically that it needed to be played more.
