anyone try to figure out this great song? I can't figure out the rhythm in the b part and am still having trouble tabbing out the a part even when its slowed down.

Guess I don't understand. Are you attempting to learn it from sheet music, tab, or sound? Sounds pretty straight forward. Key of G mostly 1,5,1,4,1,5,1 (or close to that). I had never heard it before but found it on this site. http://cdbaby.com/cd/jackstraw4. Maybe just slow it down to 1/2 time of the first part. I haven't played it yet but do like it.

The versions i've heard (from "that was now, this is then" and "bluegrass mandolin extravaganza") are in the key of D. However, Jack is right that the chord changes are mostly 1(D)-5(A)-1-4(G)-5-1. Frank does transition between those chords using dominant chords. The right hand part on the B section is tricky. According to Frank, Grisman never got it quite right on the extravaganza recording but it sounds good to me.

He switches between 4/4 and something like 3/4 but it's got something else going on in the 3/4 section, different accented beats than you would expect in 3/4 maybe?

Its a great tune and according to Frank "tricky" timing wise. Quirky, but it gets in my head and stays there for days.

after slowing it down the b part doesn't sound like 3/4 at all, only at full speed. theres something different going on there can't put my finger on it though.

Well, it seems syncopated. Is that it?

I only heard a clip on Walmart's download site, but the part I heard was definitely 3/4. The bass was playing three quarter notes per measure, the mandolin was picking eighth notes - 6 for every three on the bass, and the fiddle part was the 2 pulse per measure feel of 6/8.

Okay, there's a longer clip at CDBaby. The part I heard is the second B part. The first time, Franks plays a 6/8 pattern consisting of [1/16, 1/16, 1/16, 1/16, 1/8 - 1/16, 1/16, 1/16, 1/16, 1/8] over 3/4 in the bass.
