My mando instructor came across a 1917 Gibson A-1 in excellent shape, which he is considering buying. #I had a chance to try it out last night. #I was amazed with the volume and clarity that it puts out, and the action was extremely playable.
It appears to be in excellent shape, with no evidence of checking or cracking in the finish (it may have been refinished at some point in its life). #The top is light in color, with a slightly orange appearance. #The tuners are new, but everything else appears to be original. (The current owner has the original tuners). #The pick guard is a tortoise-like material, and the bridge has been fitted with a piezo pickup. #He didn't have the case last night, but it is supposedly original and in good shape.
I've never played a vintage Gibson before, so I don't know what they are like, but this one blew me away. #It even had a pretty respectable punch with chop chords, something I wouldn't expect in an oval hole instrument.
The seller is asking $1600. #Does this sound reasonable for an instrument of this vintage and condition?
If he buys it, I'll try to get some pictures and post them here.
