I am trying to save up enough money to buy a Gibson mandolin. I am considering buying one of the F5G deluxe models, the ones with the same neck used on the Sam Bush signature model. Have any of you played one of these? If so, what did you think. Thanks.

First of all, if you are really in love with the feel of the Sam Bush neck, you should know that the Deluxe, or Wideneck model is not radiused like the Bush. Otherwise, they are killer. I had one that I very much miss, that now lives with another Cafe member. It was worth every penny I paid for it and more. Better bottom end than most other comparable price Gibsons, and I loved the neck profile. I spent an extra $500 or so and had Big Joe's crew give it a radiused fretboard, and then it was absolutely perfect. How much are you planning to spend, and is it going to be new, or used? Good Luck, Frank

I actually have one in the house at the moment. I strung it up with Sam Bush Monels, and it sounds good and fun to play. The neck is definitely wide at 1 1/4". It's not uncomfortable though, just different. The nut is currently cut at 1 1/8" spacing. If I want wider spacing, I've got room on the fretboard to expand. It has the typical Gibson sound and it can chop. The larger neck helps out with that. I think the F-5G's are the best bang for the buck in the Gibson line-up.

Well, I saw one on the cafe classifieds for $3500, so if I could find a used one closer to home and close to that price, that'd be great. But I would be willing to pay the full price for a new one. I'm just kinda testing the waters now, I'm gonna have to save a while before I can actually go and buy one, new or used, unless I can find a really good deal on one. Thanks everybody for all your input.

you better try out a sam bush first, that thick neck isn't for everyone.

when i was at the gibson showcase they had 2 F5G's that were killer, but no bush inlays. one was danny roberts old mandolin (it had an all black back) and the other was new and the ebony on the fretboard had a faded streak in it. both of them were extremely loud.

the one with the black back was a great mandolin with a good chop, and it really stood out when you were picking in it.

the one with the faded fretboard was still good on the note picking, but it had a chop that would stop a car (i played it more than any mandolin in there, and my wife and her friend were shopping so i was there for a while http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yeah, I'm not gonna buy anything that I can't try out first. It would be really easy to just order an instrument, but you never know what you're getting until you try it out first.

Most sellers will give you a 48 hour approval period.
If you buy a new Gibson the shop will stand behind it. You might want to save some money buying used. Some great deals out there on late model Flatirons.

If anybody is looking for a Gibson with a radius neck, check with Dennis at The Mandolin Store (http://www.themandolinstore.com/). He has a few in stock - DL, GR, F5G, F9. He will work with you.

I offer a trial period with any of my purchases; I also like to talk to any potential buyers on the phone.
