Boy did we have a fun day this past Saturday. My friend Les had his 60th birthday bash at his home on Cape Cod. It was a great time highlighted by a special gift given by his lovely wife Allison. None other than a living room performance by the wonderful, hard driving BG band Dan Paisley and Southern Grass. They played two sets and then picked with us until about 11PM at which time they headed back home for a gig the next afternoon. Thanks boys, it was special.
# There were many great mandolins in attendance perhaps headed up by a great Gilchrist Model5. It had typically wonderful tone and volume. Donny Eldreth of Southern Grass had his Flatiron. He says it's fickle, but I felt it had good power and held up nicely in the unamplified performance. A very nice Buckeye F-5 made it clear the they are a worthy consideration. #Good volume and tone(maybe not as much volume as it's owner boasts, but very powerful. Mr. Harts mandolins have a very flay profile to the top and back carving, but don't seem to be hurt by this. Like an Italian violin, it's broad flattish arch does produce great results. I had my Collings MF and still feel for the money that I haven't yet found a mandolin that I would rather have. (lucky me I guess #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif #)
This leaves me to wax poetic about the fantastic Pomeroy F-5 Blackface that, for me, stole the honors for most enticing peice. I love the build quality and the blackface didn't bother me given how fine the overall presentation was. #It had an easy way about it and I thought the tone was as good as it's more expensive cousin from down under. I know there are a good many choices to be considered these days, but the Pomeroy gets the blue ribbon at this show to my humble hands and ears. I hope everyone had a great weekend like we did. Thanks again Les, Dan and the boys, you're the best!-Joe
