maybe they thought the mandollin looked kinda oval, and it had a hole in it?

not to highjack the thread, but a in a description of a mandolin on ebay the seller states this

"quote: WARNING: It has sand paper underneath the bridge - I was instructed to do this by a professional repair man because the bridge is NOT STATIONARY. That is why the intonation is not the best - because the bridge moves around. The sand paper helps to prevent traction and holds the bridge in place"

i can't beleive anyone that had a career repairing stringed instruments would think that!

Notice he doesn't say it was a professional INSTRUMENT repair man! Maybe his plumber told him to do this.

Probably, since a heating/cooling guy would have suggested duct tape.

Hmmm...whoodathunkit, quality control issues on a Johnson.
