Recently, I noticed a difference in measurements between cases and mandolins. I have measured several cases, including Calton, Canadian, a vintage MM Gibson case, Travelite, that the distance point to point is 9 5/8". So, I measured several mandolins and got 9" point to point. I figured something was off. Then I measured a Gibson F-Goldrush and a F-5G Deluxe - both of them measured 9" across.
Does anybody have any insight at to why mandolins measure 9" across and a lot of cases measure 9 5/8"? Did the lower point shift at some point? I have heard it might be because the original vintage cases held the mandolins at a slight angle. However, most modern cases hold the mandolin at a more level position.
I would think that the distance, point to point, would be more consistent.
