Here's the plan thus far:
Traditional Burst
Stainless Steel Frets
Block Inlays
Traditional Full-Size Pickguard

I'll try to post pics as they come along...

Top--Andy says still plenty of work to do around the scroll, but I couldn't be happier with the progress.

Back--Can't wait to see some stain on here!

WOw #14 huh. Won't be long and there will be more Poes than Driftwoods. Looks great. What kind of binding are you going with?

What wood's are you going with?

Very nice. I'll bet the anticipation is killer. Lp

I'm going with some traditional black and white binding, which I think will fit with the picture I have in my head of the way it's going to look. As far as the woods, it's a red spruce top and red maple back and sides. And the anticipation....you know, I thought the wait would be much worse, but I'm actually enjoying it a little so far. Seeing it come together is really fun.

Looks great! Can't wait to see some stain on that back, almost looks like a butterfly pattern.

Andy Rocks!

Should have some finish on this very soon. I went for the vintage vibe and I'm very pleased with the result.

One more note--I changed my mind about the binding, instead going with a solid piece instead of the white/black/white. For whatever reason, that look has always appealed to me.

Has he been working on yours for six months?

Steve Cantrell
Jul-07-2007, 11:57am
He started work on it about six months ago, but shelved it temporarily to complete some others promised before mine. They've shown up here on the Cafe since then. He's still on schedule for me.

Okay, that's good. I got worried for a second about the delivery date of mine. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I was told sometime between June-August, so I'm still on track. What's your delivery date?

Chris Biorkman
Jul-07-2007, 1:38pm
I was told 8-12 months about two months ago.

Lookin great Steve, took #5 to the Smithville Fiddler's Jamboree this weekend and got a lot of compliments and curious people asking about it and who built it. Had a great time. It won't be long now. You will love the SS frets! Best 100 bucks I ever spent!

Chris Biorkman

Darrin,

What's so great about the SS frets?

F5G WIZ
Jul-10-2007, 12:38am
Can't hardly wear them out. I've been playin' on mine hard for almost a year and barely have the slightest mark on one fret. I have another mando with standard frets and about the same playing time and they are noticably worn in several places. Plus they stay nice and shiney all the time.

Steve Cantrell
Jul-10-2007, 5:33am
That's one more thing that changed, Darrin. Andy says he prefers not to use stainless frets anymore due to the wear on his tools, which I suppose I can understand. I would have liked them since I tend to eat frets, but I'll make do.

F5G WIZ
Jul-10-2007, 5:43am
Yeah he told me it takes about three times as long to fret the board using SS but I thought he was still offering it on his webpage. Too bad, I'll never own another without them.

The new pics. No varnish yet, so the figure and color will improve....if you can believe that. Check out the figure!

Nate, I guess this is one that I'll have to keep out of David's reach. Now...if I could only play as good as it looks.

Yellowmandolin
Aug-15-2007, 2:38pm
great looking mando! That flame on the back is incredable. One question though: it looks like the top is four pieces in pictures 3 and 4 on this page. Is this the case?

Steve Cantrell
Aug-15-2007, 2:46pm
No--standard top--but you can see how the wood absorbed the stain differently there. You can see the faint difference in the wood there while it was in the white as well.

Absolutely gorgeous! Is the neck a deep and strong vee, or just a photo thing? Thanks for sharing, Mike

Steve Cantrell
Aug-15-2007, 6:56pm
I'm hoping so--I've got small hands and short fingers and this is the one that works. A little broader than a Gibson with the V a little more rounded off. Neck profile is one of those things you have to explain as best you can, I suppose. I guess I could even have sent a template, but I'm hoping my explanation was adequate enough.

Aug-15-2007, 7:13pm
"Template"...?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif?...

I actually sent Andy a whole mandolin.

Steve Cantrell
Aug-15-2007, 7:26pm
Wow, Barry. I don't have enough to send...if I sent him a mandolin, I guess I'd be playing the spoons until they got back. I gave the neck profile long, hard thought...I've played extremely large, beefy necks-like on the Breedlove and Mann, and also played the smaller profiles like the Gibson. I was hoping for just a little more than the Gibson without getting uncomfortable...if that makes any sense. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that. It looks right--I guess it's all in the feel now.

Steve, looks awesome! Today was the one year anniversary of me receiving mine from Andy. No regrets! Love it. The wait is almost over.

Wow! That is a beautiful mandolin.

Steve Cantrell
Aug-16-2007, 8:18am
One other thing about the finish--it's brushed on entirely by hand, so you see the points where the wood handles the stain differently, making for a nice vintage effect...which is exactly the vibe I was hoping for. There's still some more polishing to do before it can be strung up.
