I have a '94 Gibson F5L and the neck is held to the body by a bolt and washer/nut. There is a buzz coming from inside the mando, and I think the nut and washer is loose.
What is the best way to fix it, and what type of tool is needed. Can I do this, or should it go to a repairman?
I am not sure if the nut or the truss rod should be tightened.

I was surprized that Gibson used this method in 1994 and did not dovetail the neck.

I'm almost sure those are allen head bolts, it's been a while since I've seen inside of one of those. If I'm right, you need a loooonnng allen wrench through the end pin hole to tighten them. Probably have to make the wrench if you can weld, or get somebody to make you one.

You can check the truss rod but simply snugging it and seeing if the buzz goes away.
Buzzes can be come from anywhere and sound like they are coming from somewhere else. Check every piece of hardware on the mandolin for looseness first, and perhaps the buzz will go away and you won't have to thread a wrench through the end pin hole.

Is the truss rod attached to the bolt/washer/nut, or are the bolts only holding the neck to the body?

The bolts just hold the neck on. The truss rod is anchored in the heel of the neck with the adjustment in the pocket in the peghead.

Thanks for the tip.....I just checked my tuner buttons.....2 were very loose and maybe that is why it sounded like it was coming from inside the body thru the neck.
2 screws tightened......problem resolved.
