I, and a few of my friends sat around for a while a few weeks back and decided to give our instruments names.
I named mine "Celeriolus" which is latin meaning "He who is little and swift."
The fiddler named her weapon "Prince Johnathan the 32nd"
And my good friend the guitarist named his "Cicero" after the roman politician.
Any of you have names for your mando or other instruments?

My one mandolin is named "firewood". 2 Reasons. First, if I don't play well, they can say "that mandolin is sure good firewood!" The other, the flame on the back is really wild.
My other manodlin is called "Brutus" akd Brutus the Banjo Basher http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif .

Mine is reckless (hence the screen name), #2 to be exact. #1 is long gone, #2 is a keeper A that i'll never part with and reckless #3 is an F5 about to be conceived by Don Paine. Hopefully the gestation period is only a few months and the young'un will be delivered by fall.

"Joy" my mother's name. Also an appropriate name for a mandolin. She passed away in September. I used some money from her estate to have Hans Brentrup build me a mandolin. The tail piece reads: "JOY

Mine is named "Ping tauang Che"
Unfortunately, we don't speak the same language. I am desperately trying to learn some chinese so that I can tell it what to do. I think that it senses my thirst for control, so it constantly fights back and refuses to speak any english. I'm pretty sure it has formed an alliance with my violin, "Coung Lin Le". They work together to make my life miserable.

Tom C., "Come to think of it? Where's Heather been (nik-chick)? She has a name for everything including her picks. I see she has not been on for a long time. "
You mean lil creekster,Heather (just making sure) She went to merlefest and I guess she was so bedazzled by all the music #that she needs time to recover. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I think Tom C means our 'other' Heather ... Nik-Chick.
I seem to recall she named her 'structurally-challenged' mando "Dobie-Lazarus" ... though I have no idea what model she's pickin' on these days, or what's it might be named, or where she might be.
Pretty cool that 'Creekster got to hit Merlefest, though.
Christine W,
Your recent work inpired me to re-mask and re-strip the back of my Weber. The graphics-professional in me really needed to see some cleaner lines and edges ... and now I've got 'em! Thanks for the inspiration to improve.

It's funny, I so far have only named one of them, It was the first thing I said when opened the case for the first time. A Weber Haylite in translucent gloss black ( the "metalgrass" mando ) It reminds me of the little scotty dog, "blackie" so thats what I call her.
cheers
My '93 F5L is called "Toast".

Hmmm. Well I do have a Telecaster thinline that I call (in my mind at least) Mel, reminds me of a gal I once knew. Its got a AAAA birdseye neck/fingerboard and wild african walnut top. But thats the only one I've named.
I would have named the mandolin George Foreman, but there's already quite a few of those out and about. Nobody would understand it, except me, if I called it Xeala, Crimson Queen of the Glistening Shaved Mussel. SkooterPie came to mind, but the wife would get jealous. I guess I'll call it "Strumbo", since I'm mainly playin chords. No wait, make it Strum-Bo. Hyphenated names are always so classy.

This thread is interesting and timely for me.
I bought an old homemade fiddle for $50 in bad condition in an antique shop in Phoebus, VA on a business trip a couple of months ago. #It had what looked like the remnants of Hurricane Isabella in/on the case. #Hence, I decided to name it Isabelle, which also reminds me of a grandmother-like now passed close family friend. #It's the first instrument I've ever named. #By the way, after repairs, it's a pretty nice fiddle now in the right hands.
Then, I bought the 1916 Gibson A mando a few weeks ago. #Well, it's the same age as my only living grandmother. Hence, I named it Virginia after her.
I haven't named my other mando (MK Firefly Custom), my mountain dulcimer, my old 70's Kramer electric bass guitar, or my old 70's Kramer electric guitar.
Maybe I'll get some ideas for them from this thread.

My first mando is Yarrow 'cuz she is high mountain medicine for the soul. I just got my other one, a Framus, and I haven't found her name yet. It's curious how a player's gender can morph their instrument!
I reckon if I spend all day yearning and jump at any chance for a "quickie", it's gotta be a She!

Mad Dawg and others,
I am at Western Kentucky University, in Bowling Green. An area rich in mando music history and brilliant players.
One interesting local nugget is that the last documented show of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys with Flatt and Scruggs as members took place here.
