anyone got a really basic melody of this song? I've heard it so many different ways I am having trouble finding just a simple melody, something I can add on to. Thanks.

Here is a good live version of the tune Grey Eagle (http://theworld.com/~ereilly/greyeagle.mp3) played by Bill Monroe. All mandolin lead!

Herschel Sizemore and his bandmates (Bobby Hicks, Craig Smith, Dale Perry, and David Parmley) have an exceptionally fine version of Back in Business (http://www.hayholler.com/hh_detail.cfm?ID__ID=4&aid=3) on Hay Holler. You can't get much more melodic than these guys. To top it off this is tabbed out in his AcuTaB transcriptions (http://www.acutab.com/artists/sizemore/book/sizemore.html).

yep, if your gonna learn Grey Eagle, you GOTTA get the Sizemore version. i was just listening to it this morning on my ipod - still amazes me. this aint no simple arrangement however.
this is one tune that has a great amount of interpretation, you will play this in Texas entirely different than in Virginia for example, plus the midwest has a different version - i learned my version of GE from a Byron Berline fiddle method.
you can try one of the fiddle fakebooks for a basic arrangement.

Evan: "Here is a good live version of the tune Grey Eagle played by Bill Monroe. #All mandolin lead! "
Thanks for that! #
Grey Eagle is a song long in the "back of my mind" to learn -- that recording moved it to the front burner. #
Can I ask - do you know -- what era of the Monroe's career was that played? #Sounds like it was closer to the end? Maybeit is the recording but sounded like a number of missed notes in it. #Maybe played during a period when he had the strings jack up to "Bay Bridge" height?
Wondering.
Them's not missed notes, boy, them's my style. You gotta a problem with that? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Here is another good live version of Grey Eagle played by Bill Monroe; this time Bill has Chubby Wise help him on the fiddle. Grey Eagle (http://theworld.com/~ereilly/greyeagle2.mp3)
