I wanted a Gibson F5 but only had so much money and was tired of saving and then I saw a Flatiron in the classified and it was closer to what I had. #Also I found out that is was just what I was lookin for. A Gibson sound with a Flatiron price. #Not sure why the price was less?
Is this the same as the Gibson F5G. #Mine was built in 2001.

bhaltom, I have a 2001 Flatiron Festival that I bought new. I love that mandolin: I believe those Flatirons are underpriced and an extremely great buy for the money. I bought an F5-L which has become THE mandolin, but I still enjoy pickin' on the Flatiron, and have no plans of letting her go. Congratulations on your Flatiron!
Those nashville festivals are a great buy, good for you.

Your sound clip a while back of your Flatiron sounded great to my ears Chip.
That was an F-5 with tonebars right?
I have a 84 A5-Jr w/tonebars.

Yes Mando-lynn, mine is an "F5" model (no other designation) with tone bars. It's an odd beast, it sounds a WHOLE lot like my '24 snakehead Ajr in some ways, it has that sort of mellow, tubby thing, but then it does all the things that F hole mandolins are supposed to do as well. Carlson and company sure could make some nice mandolins, and I still say one of the 3 best mandolins I have ever played was a '90s Bruce Weber signed F5 Artist.

Will Parsons told me that in his opninion my Flatiron A5-Jr. was one of the finest mandolins he has played (it was his personal mandolin before i got it). i agree with him, because i couldn't find anything in Nashville a month or so ago that i would replace it with

Sounds like there are Flatiron fans out there. I know i am one. Not to long ago I had no idea what a flatiron was.

I'm jealous! My first trip to Mandolin Bros. in the early 90's gave me a chance to try all of the mandos I could wish for. The Flatirons that I played were my favorites.
