I've always been a fan of fusion and lately have been listening to alot of fusion radio on 365. Is there any mandolin players out there exploring this genre? Any on CD?

While I love Abercrombie's recordings on electric mando I think he rarely plays it anymore. Which is a real shame.
For my money Michigan's Don Julin could be considered a fusion player (in the best sense of the word) today on both acoustic and electric mando. He's a very tasteful musician who rarely plays loud and wild but his ideas and conception are very much an extension of 70s ECM and Zappa recordings (along with lots of other influences of course).

Fusion mandolin? Is that a double necked instrument?

I agree with your view of Don Julin's music. Check out these web sites for examples of his music, especially the Neptune Quartet link:

While listening yesterday I discovered this bass player Joseph Patrick Moore (http://www.josephpatrickmoore.com/)
The tune I heard on 365 had a mandolin player Tim Ussery. The album was Drum and Bass Society. He wasn't doing much more than comping though.
I consider Matt Flinners Quartet to be fusion myself.I'm guessing that fusion mandolin is like any other jazz mandolin, where there isn't too much going on yet. Hopefully that will change. I know it's one of my goals as a mandolinist and artist.
