I would like to build a stand for a bowl back. I am curious where the instrument should be supported? Are there any areas that should have no contact with a stand? Is it just plain bad to keep a mandolin in a stand? Thanks all John
An excellent question. Of course supporting them by hanging from the headstock is a no-no; the neck joint is a weak point. I'd think that if weight were to rest on the bowl, it would be distributed a bit more favorably. But that's just a seat-of-the-pants reply: I make no claims of real expertise. I hope someone with solid info will weigh in on this topic.

I think that supporting the mandolin from the bottom, with the headstock facing and resting on something would bo your best bet, that is recommended for sitars and other indian instruments with gourds, I assume it can be applied here too.

IMHO, John, I would not "store" or "display" any instrument on a stand. #If you are playing out, that may be a different story. #I have seen and repaired far to many instruments that have been placed on a stand that has been knocked over. #If you are going to have it displayed, you may want to consider a wall fixture of some kind but in any case always consider the changing extremes of temperature and humidity.
