Yup... I might know some of you fromt the Martin board, or the old TDPri, the Les Paul Forum, etc...

But I recently tested positive for manolinitis. Looks like I'll part with my D-18GE and get into an Eastman 915. Seems like a nice mandolin for a newbie. I know dick about these things, except for what I have read and a brief ownership of an old A-model Gibson.

Anyhow, hi everyone. Now about that burnin' fast right hand stuff... -L

Welcome to the Cafe bjewell. I see you over at the UMGF. I'm not surprised to hear you are selling your GE. I suppose you'll have to get by with your D-18A http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

With the $$ you can generate by selling your GE, you will have a number of options to consider. A lot of folks here like Eastmans but I've yet to play one that I'd want to own. Not sure of the selection there in Japan. I just saw a nice, used Summit F style at a local shop over the weekend - $2100. A Nashville Flatiron Festival F would be a nice one too. I'm sure you will get a lot of advise here

There is no cure for M.A.S. Once you start down this road, you can never go back. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

You may want to contact "Desert Rose" off line. He apparently lives and works in Japan and has been involved in mandolin manufacture in Japan for many years. You never know, he may know of where to find mandolins in Japan - something other than Eastman (if you are interested in what else is out there, that is. . . .)

Welcome to the 'cafe.

Bejewell: Welcome to the cafe. I have read your posts on the UMGF with interest. I wish I had a D-18 authentic but I have a Collings D-1A and a 1960 D-18 so that has me covered in mahagony dreds. For the money you could get for the GE you can get a real good mandolin...Take your time and pick a good one. I think you can't go wrong with a used A-model Collings or Flatiron but that's just my opinion. Good luck. Chuck

One thing you'll notice on this board is that some folks just can't come to say anything nice about Eastman.

Eastmans are excellent values and can be outstanding instruments for beginners or experts.

Pick yourself out a nice one and laugh at the scoffers!!!

Good advice hanknc. I like my Eastman better than many of the other name brand mandolins I have owned over the years.

Welcome to the board, let the debates begin...tee hee
With Eastmans, play 'em...some of the less expensive models play and sound better, unless you need the flame...

What is your second mando going to be?

Eastmans are nice. I played several terrific examples at 5th string in Berkeley.

If you get a chance, you should visit Ikegaku in Ikebukuro. No Eastmans there, but a lot of very nice bowlbacks. Tell them the guy with the bow tie sent you.

i wouldn't spend money on a high end eastman. once you sell the ge you'll have near enough for a collings mt, flatiron (various ones), etc. read a bit here. i personally feel the eastman's are a bit overblown here. i have played a couple nice ones, but the majority i have played are inconsistent weak and tinny. take a little time to weigh your options.

There is also a '12 Gibson F-4 with changed tuners at the shop. They want 3200 bucks for it. I know nothing about the old ones. I had an '18 A for a while -- it is on loan to me right now.

The old-time music folks seem to like A mandos. There is also a Kasuga F-5-style model 15 from the early '80s. Loud as heck, poly finish...

An F-4 for $3200? No, get the Eastman for sure. And give the name and phone number of the store with the F-4, just out of, ummm, curiosity.

You will also find, in this Forum, a decidedly strong leaning of many towards the 1920's versions of the Gibson Lloyd Loar, but we forgive those rich folks, don't we?! (just teasing gang).

I think that you'll find the folks who like their Eastmans are a self-selecting group.

I'm not sure what that means but it makes me wonder to which "self-selecting" group you belong? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Merry Christmas!
