I finally broke down and bought a bandsaw... tired of the coping saw or having to drive around and use one here and there. Can't wait to put it to good use http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Don't you all think this is one of the most used tools in building?
I agree that it is one of the primary stationary power tools for building, the only other stationary power tools I use are a table saw and a drill press. Watch out for that band saw though, just because it doesn't make as much noise it seems safer than table saws or radial arm saws, but it can bite just as bad.

I couldn't do without one. I got about 1/8 inch into my curly maple neck block with a coping saw when I jumped up and went out and bought a bandsaw. If anyone is actually building with a coping saw I'd sure love to hear about it.

The only thing better than one bandsaw is two bandsaws. I have one setup for resawing with a 1 1/4" and the other one setup for general cutting with a 1/8" blade. I tell everyone who uses either one that rule number one is no blood on my tools or floor. There isn't a rule number two. (yet)

The bandsaw is the handiest tool in the shop for building mandos. Second handiest is a tie between the table saw and the oscillating spindle sander.

My 14" wasn't making it. #I bought a 17" to do the resawing I need to do and I love it. #Make sure your tools are set up and tuned up properly and remember, it takes just as much skill and care to operate a power tool as it does to use a hand tool. #I hate to be a "mother hen" but caution should be used with any machine or tool. #I am still the proud owner of all 10 of my fingers and I intend to die with them all as well. #Best wishes on your new toy and "use it in good health" as my Grandmother used to say.

Other than the obvious recommendations for the largest & most expensive-
What size & brand(s) of bandsaws are best value for a part-time/hobbiest luthier?
thanks.

My Delta 10" does everything I need: resawing included, no problem.. It _would_ be nice to have more "mouth" to handle larger pieces, but is the 12" really worth that much more for two extra inches? It's been rare I've needed that extra space, so I say no.. Keep it tuned up well and it'll last forever..

Can someone tell me what the term "re-sawing" means!
My father in law passed away about 1 year ago, I was over my mother in laws house and she said "go look in the shed and take anything you want," it was a treasure chest of tools.
Anyway I now have a (Bandsaw) (router) (grinder) (tablesaw) (skillsaw) (huge rasps, chisels, files) (planes) and lots of ancient handtools, all in working order.
I am just starting my 6th mandolin and now I can do it 100% scratch, with my newly aquired tools. He was a farmer for 60 years so you can imagine how much "stuff" he has (had) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Anyway I used all handtools on my other mandos and using the bandsaw and planes ect. is new to me so I am learning how to use this stuff as I build #6
Was praticing with the bandsaw today, and know I need to learn more and learn to adjust it, so I have been reading threads about it. Any tips welcome and what does re-sawing mean? Thanks JD

If you have a board that has been sawn to...say,...2 inches thick, and you want a board that is 1 inch thick, you take the board that has been sawn to 2", and you saw it again, or resaw it to 1".

Another way of saying it..
You can make two 1 X 10's out of a 2 X 10
Resawing is how you get the matched halves of the backboard on the mandolin. Just saw down the middle, then open it up like a book.

Especially if you're doing curves.
I find I'm concentrating more on the shape than the safety aspect, which is a great way to slip and amputate.
I've got a really cool scar that runs 3/4 of the way round the pad of my left thumb, thanks to the fretless bass I made before christmas.........???
