What are we comparing to? The big daddy Peterson's or the guitar shop TuneMeQwiks? I have the VS-1 and love it, but sometimes it can't pick up on whether or not my high E is E5 or B1, hmmmm.. hehe, anyway, that doesn't happen when you plug it in (with pickup I mean).. All around a great tuner, especially considering the price versus other Petersons..

A while back I was looking at the VS-1 to use for tap tuning. I called Peterson directly and they STRONGLY reccomeded against using the VS-1 for anything other than string tuning. They said I would be very disappointed.
I don't remember exactly, but it had something to do with how the unit isolated out the fundamental. It was also less sensitive, I think. Everyone pretty much said strobe was the only way to go.
I ended up finding a used Conn Strobotuner.

I had a Peterson sales rep tell me it was perfect for this application. Looking back I think he would have told me it was perfect for bending sides too if I would have asked. It was a lesson learned.

I found this article about tuning as I was searching for information about the Conn Strobotuner, even though it does not mention mandolins, it is informative about tuning in general.

Harlan--interesting site and article. I just tuned my guitar using the method described there and it sounds great, even though it doesn't 'check out' using another method of tuning (unison or harmonics). I don't completely understand all this, but I've known about these "irregularities" for a long time. I wonder why they don't make electronic tuners that take just tuning into account?

I'm not sure which Peterson that I have, but it has dozens of intonation schemes pre-defined.

Oh man have I ever lusted after a Peterson tuner for a long time! Every time I can afford one I end up buying another guitar or paying down the mortgage or something. The stomp box one looks handy too, so maybe now I gotta have two different Peterson tuners.
Maybe if I sold the 10 year old Nissan...
