Hi guys.

I'm just wondering what fingering you use for the E chord when not "chopping"? I've taken to moving the 2 finger D chord up a couple of frets - found by doing this (up any number of frets) I can now play in any key I wish - is this bad practice?

Cheers
Matt

If you need an E and it sounds good, play it. I play a 4-2-2-4 E and I chop a 4-6-7-X E all the time. I was watching an old Monroe video and he used this chop shape for his V chord.

You mean moving the 2002 D chord up so you're playing 4224? Absolutely not bad practice, do it with any chord shape you can! Open G (0023) and G minor (0013) are very handy moved up the neck, for example.

Find one that you're happy with and go with it. I still struggle to find one that sounds good to me. Lately I'll go with a 1220 for an E and a 422x for a Eminor. I like the 422x for the minor, but the 1220 doesn't do much for me. E's and F's... yuck.

Now, give me a Bm and I'm in heaven!

a 422x for a Eminor.
No minor 3rd in there though...

~ plus, 4254 is a good E7; 4620 another E with the root #the open 1st string,
as above, E 4677, with a a pinky barre, and 4577 E- (e minor).

"...a 422x for a Emin"

You can try 0220 for your Em, but I like x223 better. I use 4022 or 4457 for Bm.

Excellent - yeah I mean using 4224! I wasn't sure if it was "approved" of but obviously it's allowed! I'm starting to get nice sounds out of my mando when it comes to one finger for two courses - i.e the A - 2245 or the E 2442.

Thanks guys

Just spent the evening with a couple of nice English ales, my mandolin and the nitty gritty unbroken album

can now strum or pick along to a basic level with all the songs! Good fun

I'll use 42xx for Emin. It works out fine. The minor third is usually implied by the context. We all understood the quote above, even though technically there is missing grammar. Same thing.

Yeah, it's implied enough for me especially in a chop situation.

OK I'm gonna give 42xx a try at the next jam, as I always seem to have trouble cleanly grabbing the 4223 for one of those Em's that quickly pass by...

Matt, you may want to check out Niles Hokkanen's pocket chord guide (http://elderly.com/also/books/items/46-8.htm) which is inexpensive and highly regarded by many people around here (be careful though, it is truly pocket sized and I sent my copy through the laundry...)
