Well, tomorrow's the first Sat. in May -- Derby Day at Churchill Downs. Besides Molly and Tenbrooks, what good horse racing / horse /Louisville / Kentucky songs should one do at a session to pay tribute to the greatest horse race in the world?

Eight More Miles to Louisville comes to mind, also.

Thanks,

How about "Run For The Roses" by Dan Fogelberg? #Great song, but lotsa chord changes (and minor chords too)! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Jerry Jeff Walker recorded a song called "Derby Day" on his "A Man Must Carry On Album". #I haven't listened to that one in many years but I think it is about the Ky derby. #If not, I'm sure someone will quickly correct me. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Totally forgot about "My Old Kentucky Home", the Kentucky State song.

Also, the Stones had Dead Flowers that mentioned "...making bets on Kentucky Derby Day...". Not a good session piece, though, but fun to play anyway.

The Hot Mud Family use to do one called "Stewball". Come on stewball.... Ruuun. I don't know if it was about the Kentucky Derby but it is a song about a horserace where the horse does better in the mud. Stewball loves that muddy track.

Russ and David M. I found myself picking out "My Old Kentucky Home" a few months ago, and really enjoyed it. I only remembered my father singing it back in the '40s and hearing it now and then on TV during the race telecast. There is so much good music "out there" besides bluegrass (which I love)!

Sat. afternoon I was practicing when the Derby came on TV. When "My Old Kentucky Home" was being sung I played along on my mando. I warmed up for the Derby with "Molly and Tenbrooks"," I'm Going Back to Old Kentucky", and "Blue Moon of Kentucky". I'm not an accomplished mando player but I have fun. You gotta love Smarty Jones and the story of his rise to glory.

Now that the "Run for the Roses" has come and gone, I've got one...

"I'm Busted"
