I'm looking at getting into the home recording scene. Total novice here but I'm an I.T. guy and always read manuals BEFORE turning on and using equipment so I "think" I'm a quick study. I DO NOT want to use a PC. I use and work on them enough during the day.

I'm looking into packages like the Tascam 2488 or the like from MF. Question though: A local store has a Boss 1200 in stock. Pretty slim pickings here. Problem I see with that unit is only two (2) XLR inputs. Is this really a problem "in the real world"??

I'd like to get everything from one vendor if thats possible. Mics, monitors, stands, headphone, and digital recording studio.

I'm looking for ease of use, rich feature set, and of course, quality.

Are there users here with experience and opinions on Tascam, Boss, or Korg?

Also, I'd like to be able to go from A-Z with this setup.

I appreciate your thoughts,

chris

At comparable price levels, they all do similar quality jobs. I'd download the manuals from the vendors and see which product(s) have user interfaces which make the most sense to you.

Hi,

Go to this link MandoHead (http://www.myspace.com/mandohead) AND this link Lonely Train (http://www.myspace.com/roscoemorganandlonelytrain) to hear music that I recorded ENTIRELY on a Boss BR-1600CD. 8 track simultaneous, VERY reasonable price, and easy to use..best of all...NO PC!!!

yo Roscoe;

checked out your myspace. Sweet tunes. I like your vocal tone and chop. I'll have to check you out further on myspace. Heck, probably should get my own space...I know my 14 yoa son has one.

I'm reading only good on the Tascam 2488 when I came across it looking at the Boss at MF. I have to check further into the Boss. Got sidetracked.

For about three years I've used the Yamaha AW16G, 16 track hard disk recorder in my home studio. I've been very happy with it.

It's been replaced by the AW1600, which has a USB connection to a PC (wish the AW16G did) and 8 XLR inputs (vs 2). Should be able to get new one for around $1K. Or buy a used AW16G for about 1/2 that.

BTW, there is a GREAT user's forum on the Net for these units, which is very helpful in solving problems and getting ideas.

Lots of units to choose from. Always hard to make a decision. Good luck.

This is the user's forum for the Yamaha AW16G/AW1600. It's mainly related to these recorders, but does have some general recording topics. Very good group of people (like around here).
