Does anyone know of affordable makers of guitar-bodied mandolins? Or maybe guitar-bodied mandolas, which would be even better?

Talk to Phil Crump. He makes guitar-shaped OMs, so he'd probably be willing to make you a guitar-shaped mandola.

I would class my mandolin as guitar shaped. Link in my signature takes you to the Lark in the Morning page for it.

Mandolinettos are guitar-shaped mandolins. The ones most often referred to, are those sold around 1900 by Elias Howe Music in Boston, labeled Howe-Orme. Here's a nice page of pictures of different mandolinettos (mandolinetti?):
Mandolinettos at Miner Music (http://www.minermusic.com/mandolinetto.htm)

There was a thread on Howe-Orme instruments, and an exhibition that was held in California, not too long ago. Think this is it:

Don't know about Howe-Orme mandolas, but I'm sure that someone out there does... My mandolinetto is small, trebly, very clear, and a joy to play when that particular type of sound is needed.

Old Wave Mandolins' Bill Bussmann makes the Z-dola (left):

He's just about done with my own 4-string Jazz Dola, the "Solocomp," blonde with tortoise binding & Kent Armstrong pick-up. (I'm getting excited...)

Draleon Gypsy Jazz Mandos (http://www.gypsyjazzguitars.com/mando/draleon/royale.html) may fit the bill... Or the Ovation.

Eric Foulke, aka "Boots Mandolins" may not have originated the idea, but he made a number of them. Imo, the ones I have seen were very nice. Iirc, Eric posts here occasionally as "Erk".
