Who's playing a mandolin with an engelmann spruce top? I'll go first - Mowry F, engelmann top, red maple back, neck and sides.

Another Engelmann Mowry owner here. I've been playing a lot of mandos in the last year or so, and it has defitely led me to a love of Engelmann. It may not be the traditional option, but it has a wonderful sound all its own, which I have come to prefer.

Chris Thile's Dude #5 is Englemann.
Most of the mandos I build are Englemann, as well.

I like the copy of Monroe's Loar - pre restoration with the "The (name scratched out) logo on the headstock. What's the story on that one? BTW- his finish work looks deep and rich, very nice. Congradulations!

Couple of Gils and couple of Givens...all 4 w/ Englemann tops (some of my earlier favorite mandos I've owned in the past also had/have Englemann tops, if I remember correctly--Coombe, G. Baird, Old Wave, Donaldson). Big Englemann-top fan here.

My Roy Noble guitar in Engelman.

Question: Is Engelman a sub for sitka or a replacement?

BRW #12 and BRW #61 both have Engelmann tops. #They take a little longer to mature but give a better long term result.

Jonathan,

You can ask around the Cafe or ask Gary himself. #I think the buyer of Gary's distressed F5 is a Cafe member. #Great mandolin BTW (I had the privilege of playing it for a few tunes in a jam setting), and it has an Englemann top. #My mando, though not distressed, will have a top from the same billet.

That mandolin is the reason I considered ordering from Gary. #I've played 2 of his F5's and 2 of his A's. #Gary's work is top of the line. #

Seems like maybe I read somewhere that all Collings MTs have Engelmann spruce tops. 'Zat true? Mine certainly does, in any case. It sounds terrific.

squirrelabama, that sure is a good looking A. From what I can see from the photo, the top grain looks like that on my Givens, which is quite wide on the "outside", toward the rim, but much more narrow/tight toward the center (especially tight under the bridge). If memory serves me correctly, this "wide-outside/narrow-inside" top grain is a technique for enhancing tone. Anyway, great looking A you got there.

Was listening to Don Steirnberg last night and heard the wet overtones on his mandolin. Is it also Engelmann?
