Hey there,
I haven't seen much talk about Steve Earle's mando playing. Aside from the obvious Copperhead Road, I've listened to many other great tunes he plays the mando on. I know he's mainly grouped with the country players but he plays across alot of the genres. Here's a couple examples:overdriven mando on Regular Guy, Over Yonder, Galway Girl.

He also has that incredible album with Del McCoury.

I was never a big Steve Earle fan until I heard that album with the Del McCoury Band. Great stuff.

"Is he out of prison" Whoa, harsh !!! Steve did a tour this summer with the Bluegrass Dukes..Who are Tim O'brien(mando), Darrell Scott(banjo)Casey Driesson(fiddle). They were awesome at Rockygrass with the 1 mic setup. So, Yes, as far as we know he's out of jail.

I like what Steve Earle does on mandolin. The fact that he approaches the instrument from a different angle doesn't bother me at all; in fact, that's a big reason I like it. (I also really like the stuff Albert Lee did on mando with Emmylou Harris too.)
I don't have a whole lot of his recordings (Essential Steve Earle, Exit-0, El Corazon, Train A'Comin, w/McCourey) plus some live radio and TV -#Austin City Limits, All American Boy documentary), and I far prefer the electric stuff with the big guitar sound.
"Copperhead Road" and "Galway Girl" are the tunes I can think of with him on the instrument. If anyone has a list of of his other tracks on mando (name the song and the CD), I'll add them in to the ongoing Rock & Blues Mandolin discography.

I really like Train a Comin', with Norman Blake, Peter Rowan and others. Great acoustic sound.

I'm with Avi. "Train A-Comin'" is a great, great album. All acoustic, great covers and originals. One of my favorites to play along to.

Heard he and Del McC had some dissension when they toured together; Del thought Steve had a bit of a "potty mouth" onstage. Not Del's style...

The talk of his jail time has lasted a lot longer than his actual stretch; I don't think it was more than 4 to 6 months. His harrowing biography "Hardcore Troubadour-The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle" by Lauren St. John is an eye-opening and immensely satisfying read, especially if you are interested in whatever happened to music in Gnashville. The fact that he is actually still alive, much less avoided doing hard time is the real miracle. He made David Crosby seem like a choir boy. If you are looking for a real outlaw poet... #

The work that Del and the Boys did with Steve was super fantastic. Too bad there probably won't be more of it down the road. Here's an extended clip from Farm Aid.

He's also a pretty good writer of fiction. Check out his short story compilation, Dog House Roses.

After a show in Lexington, Ky a few years back, Steve sat on the front of the stage signing autographs. #When I talked w/him, he said Copperhead Road was the FIRST thing he ever played on mandolin.
He's got a couple more instrumentals that I can't recall names for at the moment.
EDIT: I should add that he couldn't have been any nicer that night when talking w/people. Seemed like a genuine nice guy.

regarding steve & his pottymouth, i saw the merlefest show. after standing around in the rain for about 5 hours (we had to endure hootie & the blowfish earlier in the rainstorm), steve walks out looks at the crowd in the rain & mud & goes "you are the hardiest bunch of mf-er's i ever saw" & del did not look happy. however, it was one of the best 90 minutes of music i ever saw.
steve's bio is a trip. it's amazing he's even alive. i respect him even more after learning what he's been thru.

I was searching around for any refs of Buddy Miller playing Mandolin and found this great quote from Julie Miller: (http://www.buddyandjulie.com/biojulie.html)
"Buddy and I spent parts of 1997-98 on tour with Steve Earle, whose rockin' mandolin was the inspiration to re-record the song. #I told him he was my favorite mandolin player.
He said, 'I'm sorry'." # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Steve backing Allison Moore in Haines, AK August 2005, he played mandolin for several songs in his solo set. Allison said next time you see my I'm gonna be Mrs. Earle... they were married a week later.

Trivia time: What does the "G" stand for Maynard?
OCD time: Mrs. Earl's last name was "Moorer."

I have a bootleg of one of Steve's shows with Del and the boys. In addition to their Mountain repertoire they each took time separately to play their own stuff, and Steve did a lot of talking between songs. He not only has a potty mouth, he likes to tell amusing anecdotes about his sordid past (including drug use etc.) and doesn't shy away from political issues. Listening to the live show I could see how Del would be uncomfortable with a lot of it. Too bad, they made some great music together. Would love to see that Bluegrass Dukes lineup.

That makes her lucky wife number seven I believe...Steve has certainly led a colorful life.

STEVE EARLE is probably one of the greatest songwriter in America today(Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt being the two others !) I know it might sound a little bit "péremptoire" but it's really what I'm thinking !!! I saw him in London few years ago with the Del McCoury Band and it was a blast ! What a great show and what a great album ! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I don't disagree with your three choices, but try some Tim O'Brien. #You'll be glad that you did.
