Check out this new promo (http://www.firstact.com/AboutFirstAct/InTheNews/09_28_2006_VW.aspx) -- buy or lease a new VW, and you get a free First Act electric guitar that plugs into your new car's sound system.
Hmmmm, I wonder what builder and car company should get together for a similar promo for the mandolin crowd?...

I hope it doesn't work while someone is driving!

Well, First Act is sold at Wal Mart and they appear to be completely POS instuments. They also have mandos, banjos and acoustic guitars, BTW. I have to question the statement the ads are inadvertantly making about the car the promotional instrument plugs into. I would have definitely chosen a different promotional partner if I were VW.

Had it been a Fender that might have been cooler. VWs are kinda pricey for a less expensive e-guitar. With a German (at least designed) car shouldn't it be a Rickenbacker (at least that sounds German)...

I was watching a DIY Handmade Music special one night and they had "Los Lonely Boys" (I think that's the name; they are a popular band of late) and the story of a custom made electric guitar built for them. I was shocked to see that it was made in the custom shop of First Act. It looked like it is a US luthier shop that does some high end work that got into importing and mass marketing at the other end of the spectrum.

There is a First Act store in Boston on Boylston Street, popped in there a while back. Mostly guitars and basses, but they did have one mandolin. Simple sunburst A-style, nothing impressive.

Excellent, Daniel. I learned something new today! Those Framuses (Frami?) look pretty sweet.

How about a Steinberger? Now, that would be cool.

I was at VW a couple of days ago for front and back brake pads and back rotors. Somehow I got 127,000 miles from original front pads. Everyother VW I owned it was pads and rotors every 30,000 miles.
Anyway...Guitar will work if car is moving. They do have warnings though http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I asked for a mandolin instead if I traded my car in. I got weird look.

You got to love it when Spinal Tap shows up. At least they didn't have a "Stone Hendge" moment. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Hofner? They made mandolins too.

Saturn/Gibson -- both made in the Nshville area....Of course, that could work in reverse. Buy the new Master Model and we'll throw in a Saturn........ Or maybe the Bobby Knight special...buy a new car and he'll throw in a chair...

It would've been cooler if Nigel was playing his five pick-up electric that had all the gauges on it...and did anyone else notice that Slash's tone sucked in the ad....nothing beats a Les Paul and a Marshall!!!

The pre-'74 Beetles had better tone.

Why not get a '56 Chevy pickup - WITHOUT any amp to plug into - along with a really nice F5 mandolin - a Dude, Hilburn, Brentrup, Hamlett, etc...? Kinda the reverse of the new car w/cheap electric guitar. Get a new custom mando with a cheap truck, and go "unplugged". http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hee-hee! You mean "man-purse"! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif As for VW, I will never buy another again. I love my Passat wagon, but it's been nothing but high repair bills the last few years. Oddly enough, my wife's Bug has been fine--despite what Consumer Reports says about reliability. It's definitely going to be Honda or Toyota next time. Maybe they'll have a mando promo by then. Hey, there are plenty of Pac Rim mandos to include!
Every once in a while, someone will ask me what kind of VW that is that I'm driving. I politely explain that no one should insult a Morris by calling it a VW.
