some of the pac rim brands ship 'units' a number, to fulfill the sub contract_ contract, and every once in a while it is actually a musically functional instrument.

maybe it will take a lot of voo doo to get a shaped plank to sound better.

Lol...not sure what your looking for with this post. But, I have one that will not be parted with. It's a keeper. I believe for the most part they're decent with good ones and bad ones mixed in.

Based on your description,* I would advise you to not buy one...

Amen Brady...
...the only way that one can have my MK is if they pry it from my cold dead hand http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Well, you can literally get anything you want made over there so long as you specify what you want.

I have a feeling the poster doesn't care what we think of them, but wanted to state his opinion. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

My MK Dragonfly 2 was pretty from a distance and sounded good when I recorded with it and then listened back with the volume off. What it did do great was introduce me to playing mandolin at an affordable price and got me hooked on mandolins in general. Play it 'til it will take you no further and then upgrade and sell it off. MK makes a great mando for the price.

As a matter of courtesy to other members of the community, your might want to be more thoughtful about what you publicly disparage here on the boards, or at least how you go about doing so. Unless it is some no-name MSO (mandolin shaped object ;) being hawked on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $4.99, it is quite possible that someone here on the boards may have -- and love -- the object of your derision.

I had a Michael Kelly Mandolin for just over a month before i bought my Lebeda. It was very playable & sounded reasonably good, but obviously not good enough not to change. It stayed with me long enough for me to know that i could become a reasonable player. It didn't give me the tone & volume that i wanted for Bluegrass & so i went down to TAMCO (The Acoustic Music Co.),in Brighton,UK & chose my Lebeda F-5 Premium Plus.
I suppose like in a lot of things, there are good & not so good ones.I've been entertaining the idea of getting an Eastman 614,oval hole Mandolin as a 2nd instrument, but wherever i buy one from, there's going to have to be a fair bunch to choose from.

Yeah, we can all hold hands and sing Kumbala #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

There is nothing wrong with a lively debate. Let those who cherish MK's step up to the plate and tell us why MK's are so great.

For the weak kneed, well they don't have to return to this topic.

...sure I would be glad to.

When I was lóóking to upgrade from my Harmoney POJ, I just got engaged and bought a house. #Money was obviously a little tight.

My wife and I were in Tucson around this time and we stopped in at the Folk Shop. #James Tanguay (from the Folk Shop) talked with me; listened to my playing level and made about 20 recommendations.

One of those recommendations was my MK A+. #Out of all of those mandolins, the MK A+ was the one that caught my attention. #The sound was loud and sweet. When I played it, the notes did not seem to clash or get in the way of one another.

The one thing that really impressed me was that the radius fretboard made playing the mandolin an extremely comfortable experience.

Kudo's to James Tanguay, I walked about with the MK at the end of the 2nd day.

Did it have it's initial drawbacks? #Yes, but only 1. #Playing down around the nut takes a little bit more strength but it's nothing to cry about.

I was at a bluegrass festival over a year ago and I passed my MK A+ to some folks who were absolutely astonished on how it played and how it sounded. #One guy told me that MK's weren't suppose to sound so good and asked me what did I do to it.

Absolutely nothing...
...but play and play and play....

Signed an extremely happy MK owner #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

On second glance, I'm not sure the original poster was seeking a lively debate -- it reads more like a fishing expdedition... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Jim,

You're probably right...

...however if someone has a problem with me enjoying my MK, then it's exactly what it is...

...their problem.

I've said what I said and if that's not a satisfying answer to those who want to know... ...oh well ...life goes on.

What's with Michael Kelleys?

They are well built. #They are pretty. #Their tone and volume is not bad. They're easy to play. They remain at an affordable price. #They allow good low-cost entry into any jam. #

Down side? #The market is flooded, so if you buy one don't expect to sell it easily.

I like mine for what it is: "a high quality entry level instrument".

I have been playing mine for around 3 years. It is still better than I am and has given me the chance to play a capable instrument while I search for THE MANDO.

My MK has attracted attention at jams, for its bright sound and its finish. I like it, and it plays well. I'll let you know in 10 years or so if it was worth it.
I've got MAS really bad lately however, and so I would imagine that another one will come home soon, but I'll not get rid of my MK.

What mandolins are "cool"? (I think you have to be a mandolinist to ever use that adjective for a mandolin. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif )
