Well I a huge Clapton fan and have seen most of his DVD's and have most of his ablums. Well tonight I experienced him for the 1st time live in Charlottesville, Va and it was just insane. Robert Grey opened for him and played with him on a couple songs. I am just speechless!

Anyone else seen him live or attend this concert?

Never was much of a fan until I saw him from about 3 feet away at a bar in Chicago. Man, he smoked!

I can't imagine that it could have been any better than the Clapton show I saw. It was the Derek and the Dominos tour and Duane Allman was there. Now THAT was a cuttin' contest. Everyone had a great time that night. The band and the audience.

glad you got to see clapton- great even on an off night.
my fav. was the arms benefit show for ronnie lane at msg in i think 83. - clapton, page, beck, paul rogers, charlie watt, ron wood, bill wyman, joe cocker, and more- ended the show with all 3 doing instrumental stairway to heaven- layla and ronnie lane for vocals with good night irene.

Just read he has a new album coming out next month - collaboration with JJ Cale - even some talk of JJ joining him on tour in the US next year - now that I would want to see/hear.

I'm looking forward to seeing Clapton next wkend here in Jacksonville, FL. So, you say it's a great show? Did he do any acoustic stuff- like the Robert Johnson album?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Can't wait, even if I am a mando-maniac, I was a Clapton fan way before- even saw him too on that tour w/ Allman- Derek & the Dominoes.

I saw Clapton in concert back around August of 1990 at the Brendan Byrne Arena. I thought that show should have been much more than what I experienced.

Is he good? Sure.... ...but I never could quite understand the "Clapton is God" thing that so many of my pears followed.

There is something to say when one see's the guitar skills of Alex Lifeson, Trevor Rabin, Steve Howe or David Gilmour up close and live. Those are the guitarists that have sent chills up my spine.

Now when talking about Eric Clapton with Cream, I really dig Disreali Gears. I thought that the guitar work was amazing on that record and every song on that album just rocked... ....but personally the rest of Claptons stuff doesn't really do anything for me. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I tend to agree about the more recent Clapton, not my favorite (but still a hero). #My favorite Clapton album is John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, which contains Hideaway. #Now THAT is playing with feeling. #Loved him with Cream, too. #Was a tad disillusioned when I learned that the late Tom Dowd edited Crossroads down from a much longer track, but wow, what an editing job. #I'm a fan of him, too.

Also really like the live album EC Was Here (ca '77). #Wish I could've seen that tour.

I've seen him a few times - from the 90's on and he was better than expected everytime (but once). I remain a big fan .. if I had to make once choice of what and ho to play it would be Clapton, even foregoing the mandolin - speaks alot.

After seeing the Cream Reunion DVD last weekend, I'm working out Born Under a Bad Sign on my mandolin. It would probably be easier on a guitar (fewer shifts). There's a website for Clapton and other blues material at www.12bar.de

After reading your post, I worked out the main riff as well. Thanks for tip.

It's really fun to play Clapton songs on Mando. I do a mean version of White Room.

There's a nice version of "Tears of Heaven" on Don Julin's "Mr. Natural."

Re: White Room

Right on, Santiago. Clapton sure did rock in Cream. Here's also to the co-writers of White Room and I think most of the other great Cream tunes: Pete Brown (lyrics) and Jack Bruce (music and wailing vocal).

"You said no strings could secure you at the station...Hwah-wah wah-wah wah-wah-wahhh...."

Yeah man.

I play "White Room" on mando, and my 11 year old son sings it. Sounds great! I also play around with Layla, which is much easier on a mando than guitar, but it feels too much like sacrilege to play Layla on mando.
