So last night Open Road played here in my town. Awesome traditional sound. Really love the vocals of Brad Folk. Caleb Roberts plays a sweet '23 Loar and was really stinging it. During the set break a local picker who also plays a '23 Loar pulled his instrument out and the two of 'em jammed a couple of quick tunes with my head stuck right in between - my ears were inches away from these two rare classics of the bluegrass world... just very informal during the break at Woodstocks while most folks were stuffing their faces. I couldn't help but marvel at my good luck to be in the right place at the right time... I was also amazed to hear how really similar the two mandos sounded. The only differences I could really account for were due to older strings and individual attack...and those factors accounted for very little difference. With eyes closed, it would be hard to tell one from the other...by the way, Caleb Roberts truly personifies the phrase, "pickin' and grinnin'"...
