Has anyone ever noticed that "most" teens F2's do not have a fully bound scroll. I have recenty scene a couple that have the scroll fully bound. And they were both sunbursts. Just another Gibson mystery, or is there a logical reason?? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm looking at a black face F2 with a fully bound scroll.
I have another that's not here, but, I'll check it. Both of these are from the teens.

My 1913 F-2 blackface has a fully bound scroll also.

Are you talking about the last tiny bit in the center? compare various ones at the mandolin archive..

Hey Dan,
If you look at sn# 14604 or 26303 for example you see what I mean about the scroll binding. On sn# 35255 it's fully bound.
Just curious if its original or was mean't to be a F4?? I have seen fully bound scrolls on 1913 models so I don't think it was something they did later in the teens. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

The other teens F2 I have, mahogany red colour, has the halfbound scroll. Wonder if there's any rhyme or reason to that.

I think I figured it out, it seems 1916'ish and later have the fully bound scroll. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Interesting, I'd not noticed that detail. Basicaly the letter "C" that shows inside the scroll is the unbound bit.
By the way, that's a quick easy way to spot Gibson copies.. the Gibson's inside scroll always makes a near-perfect "C" shape, where many copies fail to reproduce that correctly
