Does anyone know if there's a website or publication that would explain the differences (including dates introduced) in the varions Gibson A & F model numbers?

For example when I read about an A40 vs A50 or A1 vs A2 I'd like to have a reference know the difference. same goes for the F numbers (ie F9 vs. F12 or F4 vs. F5, etc). These particuliar numerical references I have just listed are only for the purpose of explaining my question - I am looking for a complete list if possible.

Does such a comparative reference exist? Knowledge, afterall, is very important where MAS is concerned...

thanks in advance

Gibson serial numbers do not tell the model designation or the kind of instrument they were assigned to. They are sequential for the most part and are numbered when they pass final inspection and are ready for shipment to the dealer. You can go to www.Gibson.com and go under the customer service section. There you can enter your serial number and it will give you the year...most of the time.

One of the best sources is Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars by G. Gruhn and W. Carter. Don't be fooled by title; it also covers Gibson mandolin family instruments quite well, including the info you're interested in.

There's a section here on cafe which helps with Gibson "A" styles. It does not everything but it's a good start.

Gibson A Model Guide (http://www.mandolincafe.com/archives/gibsona/gibsona.html)

It's in the archives from Cafe homepage.
