View Full Version : Rickey Wood blew away Skaggs @ Dollywood BlueGrass

chopz

Skaggs kept looking at his watch during his performance.

Naomi & the Wood Brothers blow Kentucky Thunder away.

Skaggs is too mechanical. Rickey Wood is much more melodic in his licks and a much, much better band leader.

Can't wait to hear Ralph Stanley and Del McCoury at Dollywood next week. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Poor Ricky Scaggs. What has he done to draw the ire of so many people on this website? Pick "down-down" once? Play a mandolin with non-traditional F-holes? Use a capo? There are a million mediocre bands out there -- why does he catch all the flack?
signed,
just curious

Skaggs is unprofessional.

Pros do NOT look at their watches while they are performing.

Pros do NOT refuse to play songs that their audiences request.

Real artists do NOT play like machines, like mechanical-Skaggs.

Real Artists have a sense of melody.

I've been guilty of looking at my watch on stage, when I've been assigned a specific time to play and there's no clock in view. Don't know the situation at Dollywood, but perhaps RS needed to finish up by a certain time.

I remember once when I'd forgotten my watch, and there was no clock. Relying on "internal time," I played 'way too long, and apologized, saying, "Sorry if I went over, but I forgot my watch, and there's no clock in the room." Someone replied, "I think there's a calendar on the wall behind you." I got the point (jus' kiddin', folks...).

You'd better close your eyes during Ralph's Dollywood show then - he'll look at his watch a lot more than Ricky. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

In my opinion (FWIW),i think tht Ricky Skaggs is terrific.I have his ''Instrumentals'' CD & while you could say that some of the tracks are similar - in a way that many Celtic reels etc.are similar - it's one of the best CD's i've bought this year. It seems that if people get maybe too popular, they come in for more flack because more attention is focused on them. If i could play like him,i'd be ectsatic,

Skaggs could have played for another hour. His show started at 12 Noon. He complained about having to play that early. He obviously didn't want to be there.

He basically refused to play "Rocky Top" and he was playing on the day of the UT/Florida Game in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for Goodness Sakes.

God bless him for not doing it, he is from Kentucky.

Rocky Top, by the way, is not in Knoxville. Rocky Top is a rocky peak near Thunderhead Mtn. in Blount County near Spence Field on the Appalachian Trail. I love the song before it got bastardized by the university.

Another one of these threads. #So you don't like Ricky Skaggs, fine. #What is your motivation for sharing it? #

Why do we have to have so many of these childish threads about X is better than Y or I hate X because of Y. #It reminds me of when I was a middle schooler.

FYI,

"Rocky Top" was written by Boudleaux & Felice Bryant at their home in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Perhaps you have not heard the song?

The lyrics are, "Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top down in the TENNESSEE hills..." http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

You know that Ricky emulates Bill Monroe and he is trying to carry on the same tradition as Bill was a member of MART which stood for musicians against Rocky Top! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Our band is from TN and we refuse to play Rocky Top, too. It's become so hoakey that I can't imagine anyone wanting to play it. I was at the Tn - Florida game last week and there was a little "bluegrass" ensemble near where we tail gated and they played Rocky Top over, and over, and over...it was dreadful. Give Ricky a break: take your medication.

Actually, I presently own a few Gibson Electric Guitars (Les Paul, 335, a Double Neck like Jimmy Page played).

I have owned several Gibson Acoustic Guitars throughout the years. Gibson makes VERY FINE instruments both acoustic and electric. Gibson is my favorite Guitar Maker.

I have have only been playing Mandolin for about 2 years and I am just getting to the point where my playing merits as fine an instrument as a Gibson Mandolin.

I've been considering buying a Gibson Mandolin but after hearing Rickey Wood play I think I'll buy one like his instead. I think in is an England. I'm not sure. The Luthier is located in Cayville, Kentucky, I think?

Anyway Rickey Wood's mandolin sounds better than any that I have ever heard. It has a very light satin finish, like a Martin Guitar. It sounds BEAUTIFUL! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Bill Monroe lived in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. His son James lives in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Next time I see James, I'll ask him if he or his Dad hated Rocky Top. I don't think so. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I've stated my opinion on this before. If you're out here to be openly critical of others in public then you should have the decency to sign your name. Otherwise, those of you that choose to respond, and you're welcome to, are wasting time with someone that doesn't deserve the response in my opinion.

I saw Ricky & KT in Newport News last night.

I loved it, my non-BG wife walked out impressed/had favorable comments and my 6 & 9-year-old daughters were still talking about it this morning (we had "good seats").

Miserable time? NO
Disappointed? NO
Impressed? Yes
Would I go see 'em again? In a heartbeat!

It was a night of quality family entertainment.

The only thing I was disappointed with is my playing ability after seeing those "6 Masters" in action.

[QUOTE]

Gatlinburg is less than 5 miles due South from Gatlinburg as the crow flies. In the Tennessee hills is a generality. Knoxville is in a valley at 900 feet above sea level. Rocky Top is above 5000 feet. "Perhaps" you are not familiar with the geography.

You have been speaking you mind some today, "perhaps" keeping it toward something you know would be my suggestion. When you say negative things about decent hard working people like a performer, you are going to get it back the same way.

I've seen Ricky Skaggs many times and my only "complaint" is they they get louder and louder. The music and playing is great. I took my ex-wife to see Ricky along with Blue Highway and Del McCoury in Knoxville about ten years ago and Ricky Skaggs was the final act: everyone was on their feet and I turned to look at my wife who was asleep in her chair... Figured out then and there that we were doomed.

I think Ricky and the Thunder may have blown a couple of speakers out at IBMA the last year it was at the Gault House. We snuck down to the front DIRECTLY in front of the speakers, stage left. When they hit their first licks, he grabbed his left ear and left. I later asked him why he took off, and he said that he thought his ear drum was ruptured. He still says that he has lost hearing in that ear as a result of "inside thunder." Of course, that was a large auditorium and you're asking for it if you put yourself dead center in front of a wall of speakers. like we did. It didn't bother me too much, but did give my internal organs a nice massage. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

[CODE]His attitude was a turnoff, not only for me but for a lot of the audience members that he disappointed by his "holier than thou" attitude.

Perhaps he is holier than thou. He ain't bitching on a public forum about the people in his audence at Dollywood asking him to play Rocky Top.

[QUOTE]And your point is?

I think you got it.

Though Ricky Skaggs is not one of my favorite performers, you sure can't criticize his musical ability. Great mando player, guitar player, fiddle player and banjo player. Ky Thunder is just oozing with great pickers. As far as not playing Rocky Top, most professional bands won't in respect to the Osborne Brothers. RT is their signiture song. Ask Ralph or Del to do the song. Doubt they will.

If it's safe for me to say I've only heard two Artist sing "Rocky Top" since I've been listening to bluegrass... Pick up Naomi & the Wood Brothers "Live at Dollywood Volume 1" and you'll hear it.

Better still pick up Naomi & the Wood Brothers "Live at Dollywood Volume 2" and listen to Naomi nail "Mule Skinner Blues."

Rickey Wood is the Band Leader of Dollywood's Signature BlueGrass Band, "Naomi & the Wood Brothers."

I first heard them at Dollywood back in July. Their show blew me away so I bought their CDs and I was amazed by how good they are.

Ralph will probably do "Man of Constant Sorrow" whether you ask for it or not, since it's what's made him what he is today. Of course, it is his song. Didn't really expect you to ask Ralph or Del for RT.

EggerRidgeBoy

I'm sure neither Del nor Ralph will play "Rocky Top" at their shows, no matter how many times it is requested. Why would they? It's not a song either of them is associated with. Same with Ricky Skaggs - has he even recorded it since his return to bluegrass ten years ago? Even if he has, I've never seen him perform it in concert. Asking any of them to play "Rocky Top" is not the same as asking Bobby Osborne to play it.

Likewise, Bobby isn't going to play "Man of Constant Sorrow", "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", or "The Simple Life", while I'm sure Ralph, Del, and Ricky would.

As good as Ricky and Kentucky Thunder are, I would rather see any of those other artists - but Ricky is hardly unprofessional for not honoring every single request he gets, football game or no.

I think R.S. having a hit with Uncle Penn probably has less to do with his anthem comment and more to do with a fellow named Bill Monroe. Besides Roland White says that Blue Moon of Kentucky is the Bluegrass National Anthem.

My wife and I go to Dollywood at least once a year. I have seen the Wood band. They are good, but really no comparison to Kentucky Thunder or some of the other groups you have mentioned.

U should have been at the Dumplin Valley BG festival, Bobby Osborne played Rockytop three times.
Also, this is the very first time I've seen Bobby play on stage without his hat. Must be a new thing for him.
I like Skaggs.
