Doen anyone have experience with a mondolin that won't stay in tune? I have a new Mid Missouri M-3 and it will not stay in tune. I have tried three different sets of strings, lightly filed the nut slots and it still goes out of tune all the time. I mean it won't even stay tuned long enough to play one song.
Please help!
THanks.

Did it stay in tune when it was new?

Have you taken it back to the place where you bought it and asked them if they can see what the problem might be?

The first thing that I would look at is how the strings are attached to the tuning posts. This is often an area for problems: too few wraps and the strings slip on the post, too many wraps and the strings slip into the strings wrapped on the post.

When you say that it goes out of tune, does each string go uniformly flat over time? Do certain strings go flat? Or, do the string stay where you put them, but as you play up the neck, the notes aren't right? If the latter, it would indicate a possible bridge positioning or saddle/compensation problem.
