Friday night I took my wife and two young daughters to see Mighty Fine Bluegrass Band in Millersville, PA. Boy, did they ever pick the right name! I loved Salt Creek, Soldiers Joy, and Midnight on the Water especially.
The music was just fantastic, and the the band couldn't be nicer folks. Kevin the mandolin player (AKA "ratherbpickin" here on the Cafe) was generous with his Weber Custom Bitteroot and what a nice sound that mandolin makes. Kevin, thanks for that--I didn't expect you to offer and I never would have asked, but I'm grateful for the opportunity.
The guitar player and lead singer (Big Mike Henry, if I remember correctly) stopped by to talk about the joys of having young kids and reminded us that they grow up too fast. He plays a fine guitar.
My two daughters can't sit still when there's good music playing and that night was no different. The band was kind and patient and I hope my girls weren't too much of a distraction. I had visions of them crashing into the mike stands and monitors but luckily that didn't happen.
I never would have met those guys or heard their music were it not for the Cafe, so thanks to the proprietors!
Sunday afternoon we drove to Philly to see Dan Zanes and what a rip-roaring show was that! I had the chance to briefly chat with him about the mandolins he plays--a 19-teens Gibson oval hole and a 30's with f holes, both A's. I forgot to ask what kind of picks he uses.
