I was looking through the sponsors and visited the Gibson site. I didn't know Gibson sponsored Mandolincafe. In the retired instruments section, I saw the M-6 mandolin/guitar. I was wondering if anyone here played or purchased this instrument. I am very curious to how it sounds. Also curious how much the instrument cost, when it was still in production.

Gene, I was a Gibson OIA dealer and stocked the M-6. In my opinion it was a dog and a lost cause except as a novelty. The fret scale just doesn't lay out well to tune it to a guitar and play a mandolin scale. I did have some luck with it tuning it in 5ths with the 6th string tuned down to C and second and the first string, a .008 tuned to a B. They just didn't catch on. Kenc
