View Full Version : Music rights

I created a really cool podcast at work using Audacity software as part of my job -- complete with mandolin bumpers and background music. (My accountant says I can now write off the cost of my Eastman as a non-reimbursed business expense, so I'll get back like 30 percent.) Anyway, I was all ready to post it to the Web, when I realized that the tune I used is copyrighted, so I stripped off the background music, and I have to record something in the public domain. A search of the Web tells me that anything written before 1922 is fair game, so I'm assuming that if I play something classical, I'm probably safe.

My questions:
1. Are the lists of public domain music on the Web generally accurate?
2. What would the rights cost for one-time use of a song as background music in a podcast on the web, and from where/whom would I get these rights?
3. For this one, I'm thinking of using a slow version of "Wayfaring Stranger" because I want it to really sit back there behind the talk. What do others on the Cafe do about song rights for the Web as opposed to making a CD? Since I'm doing this at work, I want to do it right (and I'll go to the company lawyer when I'm done).
