Friends of Charlie Derrington in Nashville have set up a Derrington controlled account to take online donations. For those of you who've been waiting for a chance to offer a show of support, it's now available the way many of us prefer through an online form starting at this web page (http://www.mandolincafe.com/charlied.html). You may also be seeing in the near future the same possibility at the Banjo Hangout and Mandolin Archive. I've offered the source code for web site developers interested in supporting this effort.
I hope we can all get behind this and show our support. If you've donated and would like to add your voice, please feel free to post as such here.

This email was just sent to all classifieds users.
------------
From time to time the Mandolin Cafe asks for your financial support for special considerations within the mandolin community. On August 1, 2006, a friend of the mandolin world was taken from us when a drunk driver going the wrong way down a four-lane highway hit our friend Charlie Derrington head on, killing him instantly. Charlie leaves behind his wife Susan and their daughter Anna, a sophomore in college. The Charlie Derrington Memorial Fund was established this past week by friends of his, and donations can be made online to an account controlled by his immediate family. Your support is needed.
The Mandolin Cafe Classifieds are provided to you free of charge to sell, buy and trade. This resource is managed in a fashion that has made it devoid of crime, spammers and people attempting to defraud you. This does not happen without a great deal of time and energy devoted to it on a daily basis, and every day of the year. In return, we are asking for your support today, and in this case to benefit a family that lost a husband and father.
A donation of .5% of a previous sale is suggested. This equates to a $15.00 donation for a $3,000 mandolin sold. But any amount is important and will be appreciated. Your support is needed.
Thank you for considering our request. To donate online, or to send a check, see the web page below.

Thanks, Scott, for helping to set this up. I'm lazy about sending out checks, so I was waiting on this!

Never knew Charlie, or played a Gibson, but I am confident his contribtions to revitalizng the mandolin have enriched my life - thanks to all who set up this online contribution system. Least I could do to repay a debt of gratitude.

I only talked to Charlie once, but when I called Gibson OAI, he was the one who answered the phone. He talked as though he had all day to spend with me, even though I know he was busy with many things. I'll never be able to pick up my Gibson without remembering that phone call. I'm proud to donate.

Thanks Scott for setting this up.
I used the Paypal link and it works just fine.
Hopefully many in our mandolin community will take the minute or so that it takes to support this most worthy fund.

Credit for setting the PayPal account goes to Rob Haines in Nashville who I believe did all of the ground work and was a close musician friend of Charlie's. Dan Beimborn and I encouraged Joe Vest to find someone that was a friend of the family (and had experience with PayPal) to complete the account work. It was important, I thought, for Charlie's wife to be comfortable with the process and have the opportunity to work with someone she knew personally. Now the rest is up to us.

My family and I are proud to support this fund for the Derrington family. At the basis of all that is good stands family and friends. All of us who play and treasure mandolins know that this is a small but generous community. May this help keep Charlie's memory and accomplishments close to us all. Doug Campbell

I have been out of the loop for a while and just found out about Charlie's passing. #I am deeply saddened, and regret that I will not be able to meet Mr. Derrington to thank him personally for his generosity and kindness. In 2003 Charlie sent me a Gibson A-9 as a gift in response to something I wrote on the mandolin cafe. #I am blessed to have it, for it is my master model for this lifetime.
My meager donation to the memorial fund is a token of my regard for the man.

Mike, I remember you telling me the story about how Charlie gave you that brand new mandolin right out of the blue even though you had never met him or ever spoken to him.
If I remember correctly, you told me that he really didn't want you to praise his generosity to the mando-world but he didn't mind if you told a few people either.
He just didn't want a whole lot of fanfare.
He was very good to me also but what he did for you beats anything I have ever heard about.
I know how shocked and appreciative you were and I never forgot that.
You don't run into guys who do things like that for complete strangers everyday.
You had a brush with greatness there Mike.
People like that are few and far between.
